A bunch of states and the federal government have filed a lawsuit against Facebook based on antitrust issues. It was only a matter of time. as many people have been saying that technology companies are too large. I do not have a horse in this race, as I could not possibly care less if Facebook ceased to exist.
However, I do not see how Facebook violates anti competitive laws, as the company does not force you to use its platform for personal or business purposes. It is not automatically installed on your device when you buy electronics. I have used FB to advertise, and I have found it to be ineffective. I think the advertising model is flawed because businesses have to find customers who may or may not interested in their products. With Google, customers search based on their needs, which makes a lot more sense to me. I rarely use FB personally. I am not a lawyer but I think there is a stronger argument to be made for breaking up Google. Unlike FB, I think Google is a very useful company for businesses and for consumers.
Not well-versed in legal matters but I hope Facebook is forced to divest because of the way they have completely ruined Instagram. Remember back before 2018, when Instagram was actually about posting and liking pictures and interacting with people. Now it’s just basically Amazon with a social media component to it. Everything is just endless ads and business promos. I definitely understand the “you gotta make money somehow” explanation but Facebook prioritized the money making over the actual quality of Instagram. So for that reason alone, yes I hope they are forced to divest.

I not a fan of Facebook but why is there all of this hatred on WSO towards Mark Zuckerberg? He was smart enough to create a very successful company from the ground up and was able to make billions of dollars from it. He seems to have led a clean life with one wife and two kids. He also signed the giving pledge in which he agreed to donate half of his net worth over time.

Wouldn’t say I hate him. I just don’t like what Facebook did to Instagram. As the old adage goes “nothing personal, it’s just business.”

A lot of people are mentioning instagram, I think Oculus is another sad story. They’ve essentially abandoned the Rift S because it can run steam games. They’ve overall worsened the VR landscape, and recently doubled down by linking oculus and facebook accounts.
