Fired for driving a Lambo?
I hit it big in a meme coin and currently drive to the suburbs for a corp dev gig. I want to continue working bc I enjoy it, and I want to buy a huracan with a portion of my profits.
However idk how this will be received by my boss. He’s a chill dude but i genuinely just dont know how this would be received. Im fine with being judged but will it get me fired?
How big?
He'll think you're an idiot but I don't think it's fireable
why
because you're not supposed to stick out in banking - it's not the most constructive image for someone if they're perceived to be splashy spenders / like drawing attention to themselves. it's the same reason why you don't see a lot of bankers with visible tats or wearing diamond encrusted watches. if you want to buy yourself something beautiful because you derive personal enjoyment from it, there's no need to let other people know. plenty of MDs have sports cars, they just don't publicize it. if you can afford a Lambo, you can afford a nice daily and then rip around on the weekends.
A # of years ago there was an IB analyst who was notorious for driving a bright green lambo (I think BAML in Palo Alto? Not really sure anymore tbh). He wasn't fired, but generally agree with everyone that this would be a dumb move with not that much upside.
How does an analyst afford a lambo tho
Think I remember hearing about this a while back. Wasn’t this analyst’s dad some big shot tech exec / founded a tech company?
Companies can fire you for any reason at all that does not violate the law but it would be dumb to fire you because you bought an expensive car.
If I were in your shoes, I wouldn’t mention it to my coworkers or boss, and I definitely wouldn’t drive it to work. It’s not about hiding it, but more about avoiding unnecessary attention. You’ve hit it big, and that’s great, but keeping things low-key can save you from potential judgment or unwanted conversations at work. Let your success speak for itself, and enjoy the Lambo without mixing it with your professional life. If you really love your job and want to keep things smooth, it’s better to separate the two.
I'm in memes, what coin? Just don't drive it to work it's in poor taste. Get like an M3 or something more lowkey for the drive to the office. I get that the suburbs is much better to drive freely in but it's not worth taking it to work and being judged. You probably won't be fired but you'll look like an idiot for showing off.
Just buy a $400K Patek and tell everyone it is fake.
I'm a car guy and Lambos are just bad taste. (outside a Miura) Buy a vintage Porsche or Ferrari with a five or six speed and people will love you. Nobody can say bad things about a 355, 993 or 930.
The last thing you want is people who are in charge of your career and your peers hating on you. You're making your life unnecessarily more difficult than it has to be.
