Fishing in Battery Park

I run fairly regularly along Hudson River Park to the Staten Island Ferry, and I've noticed that on most weekends, there are a plethora of guys fishing in and around Battery Park. Has anyone on WSO given this a shot? If so is it worthwhile, and would a license be needed?

Thanks

Yes a license is needed in fact I would imagine multiple licenses would be needed. Fishing, salt water, and bay or port licenses are what come to mind.

I'm not sure this is correct. I was talking to a NYC native who is a big time angler, and he said a license is only needed for freshwater. I haven't looked into it further, but he seemed to know his shit.

As far as fishing from Battery Park - unless the stripers are running, he said you'll have much better success fishing the surf from the beach/jettys. You also need one hell of a setup.

I'm not 100% sure but when you consider that you need a license to do just about anything in NYC that doesn't involve walking on the sidewalk it seemed like a pretty safe bet. In Texas you have to have a fishing license, then you have to get the various stamps for it, freshwater (this is often the base license), salt water, marsh, sound, port, etc. The license is pretty cheap in of itself used to be just a processing fee but the additional stamps were like $15 to 300 each depending on what you wanted to get.
