Freelance Journalism

Asking here because I'm sure WSO users are pretty intelligent - we're a smart bunch, very entrenched in whatever industry we work in, and probably have a good deal of knowledge that's useful to other people.

Has anyone tried freelance journalism? I'd appreciate some shared details on how you got started, your experience, if you got paid at all, etc...

Not as interested in the money, I enjoy research, learning and writing (i know, i'm weird).
