Game of Thrones

Am I the only dork on WSO that watches Game of Thrones? After reading some of the threads on here; I highly doubt it. If you're a secret resident of Westeros - check in here.

PS - If you read the books (I didn't) - don't be an asshole and drop spoilers.

It's not a secret at all. I feel like there's a ton of GoT fans on WSO. Nice to see you're one of them Ragnar.

Sweet tag bro.

VontropnatsGoT is the stones...I don't think you have to be a nerd to like it. It's just insanely badass and well done -- anyone can appreciate both of those qualities.

Totally agree. Plus, who doesn't enjoy a weekly does of hot, steamy incest!?!

I read the books and watched season 1. I'd definitely recommend either the books or the series to anyone. You really need to pay close attention to enjoy it -- very intricate set of relationships among the characters. Once you get deep into it, you realize that there isn't really a "good" versus "evil" plot so much as a large number of characters that all act very human. Also, George R. R. Martin isn't afraid to maim/kill lead characters off, so you get some emotional highs and lows when your favorite characters get captured, injured, or killed. Of course, the books are filled with sex acts, so that doesn't hurt their readability/watchability either. I haven't started watching season 2 yet, but I'm excited to see the book come alive like in season 1.

P.S. I wouldn't really consider it that dorky. I know lots of hot chicks that are really into GoT.

Yeah, the red wedding really punched me in the face!

P.s, while Season 1 was very true to the first book, season 2 is taking a different approach. It's following the same overall arc, but it's focusing on a lot of 'off-screen' stuff in the book and barely focusing on the POVs in the book. Not sure I approve, but it's still entertaining. I think they're going a bit overboard with the explicit content though. I'm really not looking forward to the scenes at Harenhall...

Um...i'd probably take out the first part of your post...just so people that read it in this thread that haven't read the books wouldn't be spoiled when the time comes

anyways, great book + great series. the casting on the show has been amazing. I would even venture to say the series has done a great job of trimming the fat in the books that were fairly meaningless.

now, when is book 6 coming out?

Love that shit.

Under my tutelage, you will grow from boys to men. From men into gladiators. And from gladiators into SWANSONS.

I like to fantasy fiction, so maybe I'm biased a little, but GoT is awesome. You don't have to like fantasy to appreciate the show. HBO always kicks ass with the shows they put out. 40 min count down right now

I recently started watching it. I finished season 1 in one day. It is highly addictive. Very awesome TV series.

It is a great series, I have read all the books and seen all the episodes. And i came across some hot chicks talking about GoT at a bar once... i was in love. I don't think its nerdy.

There have been many great comebacks throughout history. Jesus was dead but then came back as an all-powerful God-Zombie.

I love the books. Started reading them over six years ago. Not too big on the TV series though, I'll take GRRM's writing over Hollywood actors any day. It's unfortunate that GRRM has been caught up making the show. I waited years for 'A dance with dragons' and it looks like I'll have to wait a few more before the next one comes out. At least I have Scott Lynch and his Gentleman Bastard series now.

Were you somewhat disappointed with Dance as well? I thought it was the weakest in the series. Too much filler and Tyrion and Dany really pissed me off...

It definitely set up Winds of Winter well though so I have high hopes for that. So far, Storm of Swords was by far my favorite.

Show is awesome, but the books are infinitely better. I would even say that a case could be made that the story overall is better than LOTR so far, although Tolkien obviously came first so I think he gets more credit for really getting the fantasy/fiction style of writing.

I agree with CompBanker though, the character development is what makes the series/plot so good. It's nice to actually read and watch something that will keep you guessing, as opposed to essentially knowing what is going to happen at the end with a cliche writing style/plotline.

Sidenote (Spoiler alert if you haven't watched season 1): Sean Bean literally gets punked in literally every movie/series he's been in the past decade. Can't believe he hasn't found a role in which he survives the entire thing.

Dude case closed. LOTR was first, but ASOIAF is so much better that it's not even a comparison. The characterization, the prose, the story telling is a lot better than LOTR.

CaliforniaAnalystim a fan of the books. tv series was ok. daenerys targaryen should be played by a lot prettier and cooler girl
The casting is great as far as talent, but the looks are way off. Like wtf is up with Catelyn? Isn't she supposed to be gorgeous in the book? She's an old hag in the show. Margery Tyrell is way less hot in the show than she should be. Sansa is not even close to as good looking as she should be. Arya is not nearly as ugly as she should be. Robert Baratheon is like 5'10'' in the show, and 6'5'' in the book...the list goes on and on.

But yeah, Daenerys should be the most jaw droppingly gorgeous girl on the planet. Not the 7/10 they picked.

I agree with you, although I kinda like Daenerys' look. Even though she isn't a 10/10, her persona definitely gets her an extra point or two. You are dead-on about Sansa... seeing her in the show actually ruined her character for me. I was expecting the most gorgeous chick I've ever seen.

I was probably most disappointed in the casting of Tyrion. Peter Dinklage has been in numerous films and I would have rather seen a new face than a "familiar" one. Kinda weird and I don't know how to explain it.

CompBanker’s Career Guidance Services: https://www.rossettiadvisors.com/

Peter Dinklage is a great actor...I seriously dont think that choice is questionable. Pretty hard to find a dwarf with those kind of acting chops. I also think Daenerys looks pretty damn good for having just birthed dragons and trekked through the dessert...but I didnt read the books so maybe I dont know. The fire woman with the smoke-vag could be alot hotter although she is growing on me.

GOT + Mad Men back to back has basically eliminated going out on Sunday nights for me...

Peter dinklage's portrayal of Tyrion might be one of, if not the, greatest characters every to be on TV.

Brady4MVPHuge fan of the series, and this is coming from someone who thought the lord of the rings movies were overrated (loved the books of course).

Game of thrones is less about fantasy and more about power and intricate social dynamics. It's highly relevant to the modern world despite its fantasy nature.

I like the show a lot, but the books are sick. There is so much more intricacy and subtly in the books. You have to piece the back story, rumors, and how perceptions of characters affect the story on your own. I read the books 3 or 4 times before the show came out, and I realized that Renly was gay the last time. None of my friends believed me until the series came out; that's how much more subtle things are.

Haven't seen the last episode ... definitely got spoiled a bit on the back page of this thread. Will watch this weekend before the new one.

As Bondarb said, that devastating one-two combo of Game of Thrones/Mad Men on Sunday nights literally incapacitates me in regards to outside human contact. Lift in the afternoon, shower, dinner, quality TV.

RagnarDanneskjoldTonight was a little slow, but I think this was a set-up episode. My friends who read the books and watch the series said that they have to cram in a lot of crazy shit.
It was slow. The buildup in the show isn't very well done so far. The setting of the chessboard in the book is phenomenal, and I guess it's quite difficult to translate that over. I don't really understand how people who haven't read the books are keeping up with all of the details. There are some very significant hints that are being dropped that I don't think the majority of viewers will pick up if they haven't read the books...

SPOILER ALERT - DO NOT READ IF YOU PLAN ON READING THE BOOKS

Too bad the show made this all up. I can understand why they did it, but the person for whom Arya is actually a cupbearer in the book is Roose Bolton, one of Robb Stark's bannermen. They missed the opportunity to show just how creepy Roose and family actually are. I have no idea how they'll with the theon/reek stuff without a proper introduction to ramsay bolton, which won't be dramatic at all since roose bolton is basically cut out, and probably won't be the mastermind behind the red wedding in the show...

RagnarDanneskjoldShit is going down in Westeros. Tonight's episode was insane. Again, I haven't read the books but methinks Greyjoy has done fucked up.
Haven't read the books either but my friend said some parts haven't been following the books (i.e. the end of this episode).

It's been deviating away from the books, I think for the better. I've read all the books and can elaborate if anyone would like

Biggest deviation so far (aside from Arya chillaxin' with Tywin) is Dany's dragons being stolen. And the wildling chick fucking Theon. And Bran having the dream of the sea coming to Winterfell (it was another pretty important character in the book whom they haven't even introduced). I'm starting to wonder where they're going with all of this.

Dany's dragons really weren't stolen in the novels? I feel like that was a fucking enormous plot point that could completely change the entire arc of the story and cause an enormous rift between the books and the show. must be just for cinematic purposes then (like when whats his name was in the room with arya and tywin but nothing came of it..?)

Believe me, the show is not going in a good direction. It's not a spoiler because I'm not giving any of my theories, plus the show has already side stepped this, but one of the biggest mysteries in the books is Jon Snow's true lineage. They are doing the story a huge disservice by not bringing in this arc.

Secondly, they are doing Dany a huge disservice by showing her to be some petulant, entitlistic brat in the way she's dealing with the thirteen. She is very very cunning and politically savvy, especially for her age.

Anyone else think it was completely unnecessary for the Thirteen to almost deny Dany entrance to Qarth when in the books they welcomed her with open arms with a lot of fanfare? And that Pyat Pree, Quaithe and Xaros all traveled through the red waste to invite her specially to come stay in Qarth?

The whole Arya Tywin thing is really pissing me off. It's just so out of character for Tywin, although Jaqen is exactly how I pictured him.

The whole omission of Jojen and Meera Reed has immediate dividends, but the cost will not be worth it in the end.

The list goes on and on. Whoever thinks the changes are for the better doesn't know what he's talking about, or has only read the books at a shallow level. This story is so incredibly deep and intricate, with so many mysteries, that there's really no room to trim fat in the first three books. Books 4 and 5 they can definitely take a lot out of for the show.

What they should have done was have each season be 15 or 20 episodes, and done the story justice.

-MBP

Refusing her entrance allowed the richest man in Qarth to show his allegiance/get closer to her more quickly, a process that took a while in the book.

RagnarDanneskjoldHey book guys: I'm half of the way through Game of Thrones. A few of my friends have told me to stop reading after Storm of Swords. Do you agree?

If you are not tempted to read the books after Storm of Swords I am not sure if you're truly in love with the books :) I honestly couldn't wait to read A Feast for Crows after.

I can see what your friends are saying and understand why there is a lot of hate for book 4 and 5. However I still enjoyed them and I think anyone will

important or not, i dont like it...i wood prefer as close to zero of a supernatural element as possible. did not tune in for harry potter. not tryna hate, i just dont roll with 2 much of that turkey jive magik.

Value_addedStill enjoying the show but one hour episodes are not ideal for this many storylines and complexity. Does it bother anyone else that certain storylines/characters get no time in certain episodes?
There are books that barely mention characters and then they feature in the following volume. Just the way he structured it.

I have not watched season 2 yet, but I'm personally slightly glad that they are deviating (slightly) from the books. While it was very cool to watch the books come alive in the form of a show, the excitement of not knowing what happens next just isn't there. Some deviation at least brings back the "unknown" element which I really enjoy.
