Getting an Offer in the Middle of the Summer

I've asked a few people and nobody said it was something they've heard of very often, so I'll ask the WSO community. Yesterday I got an offer to come back for full time with the firm I'm interning with this summer, but I've only been working there for a month or two and I'm assumed if anything they'd wait until the end of the summer to make a decision? So my first question is, is this common?

Second question is, the offer was verbal and I don't have anything in writing. Should I assume then that it's really like I didn't get an offer at all, or could that be viewed as an official offer?

Last question is a bit more general... what is the deadline like on answering a return offer, typically? Do you have to accept it before Fall recruiting for seniors starts or do they give you enough time to still recruit and at least interview with other places?

Thanks monkeys

Congrats for getting a job. I'm still looking :(

i talked to BH about this. If I were you i would shop around talk to other firms you are interested in now and let them know of your current situation. i doubt they will give you anything in writing anytime soon, it will probably be closer to the end of the internship or soon after. they usually give you some time to decide but probably not enough to interview in the Fall. you might have to go through an accelerated process at the firms you are interested in (if they have one).

You already know I have no clue on this but I'm only here to point out that whoever added the picture of the monkey raising his hand... best picture ever.

Firstly, congratulations. Do not assume anything until you have an offer in writing. Deadline to return a signed contract will usually be tight, but firms generally expect a proportion of interns to renege on accepted offers anyway. Be extremely discrete and cautious if you try to market yourself to other firms, at least until you have signed a contract with the firm you are interning at. Better off securing a firm offer first.

The place I'm working is a bit strange in that its hiring process isn't typical of IB or anything like that. My offer for this summer was verbal, never had anything in writing, and I'm the only intern. I like the old-school feel of that so I'm wondering if it's possible that this is all I'll get... like a DLJ thing where nobody ever actually "offers" you explicitly.

But definitely thinking you guys are right, and nothing is real until it's in writing.
