Honestly, I think it's hit or miss. I've had some fantastic meals and some fair meals at the place.
For drinks, go to Union Square Cafe and sit at the bar and order a few appetizers.
Travel down to TriBeCa for a meal at Bâtard — really stellar food and an incredible wine list. Craft in Gramercy Park is also a favorite of mine.
Gramercy tavern has always been great for me, but there are other places I’d go first.
Thanks for the suggestions! I also have reservations at Nobu & Erminia (not as well known, but it on the Upper East Side).
Wholeheartedly agree on hitting USC instead. Have heard mixed things about Gramercy Tavern of late.
I've been somewhat recently, and honestly I think it's still as good as ever. That said, I feel that at USC you get a lot more for your money. Both wonderful experiences though.
Nobu is not that great.

Don't eat at the restaurant eat in the tavern part that doesn't take reservations. Get the burger. Thank me later.
Not sure if you are looking for something more intimate or not but I'm a fan of Bo Peep in Midtown West for good cocktails and live music
