Hockey on Wall Street

Are there any people out there who play ice hockey and either work or are pursuing a career in finance? If so what are some good places to play in your city? Is there enough time with your work hours to play on a team? What tends to be the overall skill level of the groups you play with?

You don't have to be at a college skill level to respond, all input is appreciated.

lots of different leagues at Chelsea Pier so should be able to find something that match your skill level. Games tend to be during school nights so attendance can be an issue depending on what type of finance work you do. I wouldn't bother signing up if you're going to do IBD because realistically you're going to be able to attend 10-20% of the games, but it's very possible if you do something else (ie. S&T, AM, etc). I've been playing soccer (5 a side indoor during winter / 11 during summer) since I was a PE associate and been able to attend most of my games.

I've been wanting to pick up hockey again (hockey was my life growing up), but the logistics can be a bit daunting. Carrying your bag though the city is a massive pain....

Thanks for the info. At my previous job there was a lot of people who played hockey which was not only awesome but was actually a good way to build important relationships as well. Are there any people who play that you work with, or do you think only a small number really play?

I am hoping to have a job in NY area by around may. If it all works out and you need someone to play hockey with I'd be down if I have time.

Hockey is probably highly correlated with Wall Street for the same reasons lacrosse is. They are predominately Northeast (and Canadian) sports, played chiefly by rich white males who attend boarding schools or good suburban high schools, and then matriculate to schools in the Northeast. In other words, roughly the exact demographic that goes in to finance.

I was born and bred as a hockey player, and I've got to say, the new NHL sucks - no defense, no strategy, way too much open ice. There's a reason I prefer hockey to basketball, and the NHL insults that. It's not at all like the scrappy game that I grew up playing and loving. For my money, I'd rather watch college hockey any day of the week.

I'm from Minnesota and I've played hockey for 20 years. I could have played DIII at a smaller school in Minnesota, but decided to go to a better school in Chicago without a varsity program. I played club throughout college and now play weekly in a men's league. On my team of ~18 guys, there are 3 traders and one portfolio manager.

I'm guessing it's more that finance and hockey both attract alpha male/testosterone/aggressive types of people - there are also a lot of cops in my league.
