how common is switching teams internally at a corporation?

Currently entry level at a F50 company. Switching groups within your department or outside (this is harder to I guess) within firm is allowed after a year. I'm just wondering how common/easy it is to switch? For example, you apply internally, don't get the job with the team your in contact with often, kind of awkward? Obviously varies amongst companies but just curious from others experiences.
