How do you keep yourself from smartphone distraction?

Hey monkeys, I was wondering how you handle the constant distraction that is your smartphone. Apparently, the typical smartphone user, uses their phone up to 80 times a day; personally, I feel as if I could benefit from significantly lowering that number.

Scientists have begun exploring that question—and what they’re discovering is both fascinating and troubling. Not only do our phones shape our thoughts in deep and complicated ways, but the effects persist even when we aren’t using the devices. As the brain grows dependent on the technology, the research suggests, the intellect weakens.

There is a mountain of evidence suggesting that simply having your phone around you prevents you from concentrating on difficult problems and jobs. "The division of attention impedes reasoning and performance."

Personally, I feel as if the closer I am to my phone, my brainpower significantly decreases. However, the smartphone proves to be a great tool when I need to access information instantaneously. The convenience of owning a smartphone is great, however, I definitely notice that I may have developed an 'addiction' over the years.

What steps do you guys take to decrease useless smartphone usage? Do you guys find yourselves struggling to focus because of your smartphones? What do you think of smartphones as a whole?

I'll usually just put mine in a drawer or on airplane mode while I'm working. Having home screen notifications turned off is helpful too.

This might be a valid study for a younger age group or in school where attention is affected; however, most people on here check their email frequently from the convenience of their phone. This isn't going to stop anytime soon.

I just Googled this and found a number of apps that help. I'm now seriously considering using one of these apps. Was on the train the other day and noticed that people--particularly females--have become smartphone zombies. It's really sad. Men and women both seem to struggle with this, but for whatever reason, from my observations, females seem to be most susceptible to it. I chalked it up to them responding to dating app messages, but who knows?

They are only on there for emotional validation. I've confirmed with a couple of girls I had flings with. I straight up asked them out of curiosity and they more or less agreed. It makes them feel good about themselves thats all.

Try stripping your phone of the apps/programs that lead you to compulsively check it-- even if you just commit to it for a week as a trial. My guess is that you, and many others, would find the absence of constant temptation quite liberating. I don’t want to sound priggish, but I keep social media entirely off my phone now. Otherwise, I’ve found it quickly becomes a mindless way to self-occupy while adding very little to my life.

In short, instead of getting better at managing the temptation you may be better off removing the temptation all together.

Am I the only motherfucker in town not fighting a smartphone addiction? I have problems with drugs an alcohol like a fucking gentleman. I go on Instagram when I shit or if I'm in a waiting room. And I'm never in a waiting room because the medical system confuses me so I just eat spinach, do pullups, and never go to doctors.
