How NOT to Email a Recruiter
Wisconsin University student "reminds the recruiter about a zit he had when they met and reveals his fears about how a high-pressure job may affect his love life." - Business Insider
You may or may not have already received this email this week, or perhaps read it on Business Insider or BroBible today.
But, here it is in it's entire Sent From My iPhone glory.
Subject: QuestionHey REDACTED,
We talked a couple weeks back at the UW-Milwaukee accounting night. (I was the one looking for equity research positions and had a zit on my lip that could have passed for a cold sore. Lol. Whew. It was not. You're probably like, "uh.. What?" Maybe that helps you recall, maybe not. Not completely important, I suppose.
Anyways, if you have a chance here is my question: (background first) I interviewed with BDO and Baker Tilly today, two firms that seem like good places to work, I believe they don't kill you like a big 4. Tomorrow I have an interview with Deloitte :O somewhere I thought I've always wanted to work. Obviously I don't have an offer so this is all hypothetical thinking, but if I get the job, the reality of the situation is that I'm getting old. 25. I know you can't force love and I know it just comes when you're not looking, but would working for a big four completely squash any possibilities for potential relationships if one came along? Is working for a big four a potential career - love trade off? I mean, I like money(as do most females) but love is...great :) What are your thoughts?
Thanks!

Sent from my iPhone
Yeah, I got that a couple days ago. Unredacted. What a mess. I feel for the kid, but holy shit, how dumb can you be.
sent from iphone best part
Haha this is gold. Perhaps even better than that Michael Penn kid (who gave out free coffee and his resume outside banks and got interviewed on Bloomberg TV) saying he wants to enter IB because it's like chess.
Saw this on an accounting blog a couple of weeks ago. It is ridiculous, and I wouldn't hire him to mow my lawn.
That said, he will probably be able to land a job at second tier accounting firm, which says a lot about the firm and a little about the industry in general.
*her
Lends to the rationale of the last few sentences.
It's a guy. Got the non-redacted version last week. Kid still had his LinkedIn up and everything.
Really? I would think this would be blacklist material.
Now that this email has gone viral, it's likely that he will have a hard time if his name is attached in any way (which I think it might be). However, getting an interview at any top 100 school won't be hard, and once you get the interview it's even easier. Just my opinion though. I have worked with some eccentrics, to say the least.
Priceless.
From a female's point of view, 'sent from my iPhone' means she was drunk back then and her ex typed that up on her phone as a goodbye gift, if this is not a joke.
That is probably the answer.
Or vice versa
Also, this may be a banker mentality, but to my knowledge grad accounting roles don't pay too much? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Not fantastic comp. Usually hit the bottom end of 6-figures pre-bonus around 5-6 years in. Start low, but 10%+ raises are not unusual, with 20% raises in promo years.
Some years are 5% raise is normal; a 20% in promotion year is super rare, probably reserved for a top rated performer who was given a smaller bonus in the PY for economic reasons. 6 years in a big market (NYC) MIGHT get you to 6 figures. Every other market you won't see 6 figures unless you're very special and rare until year 8-9.
As soon as I saw that "UW-Milwaukee", I knew I was in for a ride.
Seriously though, absolutely no chance this is real. Some kid was set up.
Might not be real, but it's almost too tame to be trolling. It's just pathetic enough to be real. Plus if you've spent a lot of time around 2nd and 3rd tier Big 4 recruits... let's just say this type of absurdity isn't as rare as you would think.
It's real. The kid made a Youtube video of him singing a song - the title was "Career Suicide".
What the hell did I just read?
This is just absurd. Emailing recruiter for dating advice...
I cringed at the smily faces and the use of lol.. not sure why he thought that was okay.
What kind of person starts a letter with "Hey"?
My thoughts are to go with love.
I'm surprised someone this stupid AND from a non-target even landed that many interviews. None the less, I feel bad for the kid. Business Insider helped destroy quite a few lives.
