How often do you replace your formal shirts?

Wanted to ask the rest of this white collar community a bit of a shirt related question. Most of my formal shirt collection originates from a little over 2 years ago when I started my job (Big Four). I wear these shirts usually once a week for most weeks (washing them on the weekends).

I've gone for mid range shirts usually, (mostly M&S ones in the UK, if that means anything to anyone) so nothing too fancy or too cheap.

Over time these shirts aren't quite as nice as they used to be: despite constant washing the stains on the collar fold as well as the armpits have been becoming worse.

I accept that nothing lasts forever and most things will have to be replaced after a while so I was wondering how often would one generally replace a formal shirt with a newer one? I don't want to waste money on the one hand but on the other, buying a few more shirts isn't going to drive me bankrupt either.

adapt or die

I blow through the left elbow on my shirts. I realized that I like to put my left elbow on the desk when working alot. I constantly send shirts with large holes to the dry cleaner accidentally.

Uh.....what? The tension between your shirt and your desk rips a hole?

Wear an undershirt, and wash at relatively low temp on a gentle cycle unless you have an actual stain that you need to get out of the shirt. This will increase the longevity of the shirts greatly (I've been using the same Charles Tyrwhitt non-irons for the past year or so and all of them are still in good working order).

If the shirts are ripped and/or have visible stains on them, then you are probably better off spending a bit of money getting new ones.
