How to become CEO of a large organization or in Finance

I was wondering what the process was like beyond MD promotion. Someone I worked with is no longer an MD at my bank and he is now the global head of his sector and I was wondering what promotions at this level looks like behind the scenes. Are other MDs gunning for such promotions as well, or are a lot of them burnt out so not willing at that level, I ask this because I know a few guys in their 60s like this and I wonder why they don't get promoted higher since they seem to be competent enough to be in banking for so long.

Here on WSO we mostly stop promotion discussions at MD and I am just curious what the steps were for someone who wants a C Suite Role. I wanna pivot over to Consumer Retail because a lot of our clients in that sector at my bank are very well known and public, if i do not stay at my bank.

I am still very young but i do fantasize about becoming a big shot CEO and what wondering what it takes.
