I don’t drink
This summer I’m going to be working at a HF in the city for the first time, and I know finance culture has a lot of drinking in it, however, I don’t drink. what should I say when my pm asked me to go to the bar with him?

Simple. "Thanks, but just so you know I don't drink. I'll be happy to join you but just have an unsweet tea though." If you own it and aren't afraid of saying it you'll get more respect.
Or a club soda with lime.
Agreeing to disagree about drinking. Love it
Agree with this. A know a lot of people who don’t drink up here
You don’t have be weird about it or feel ashamed. Just say you don’t drink and offer to go with them while you order a ginger ale.
Tbh I respect that. It also means people can trust you not to get plastered at work events and make a fool of the team
Are you 21?
Ya
Don’t have to say anything. Have worked with plenty of Mormons who just order club soda with lime and engage as anyone else would. Nobody is getting wasted at these things for the most part. Shouldn’t be an issue and most people won’t even notice.
agree
Do you not drink because you don't like the taste of it or because of religious reasons? Not trying to ask personal questions but gives me better info on what advice to give.
Example, I know someone that just hates the tastes of alcohol and he'll get club soda with lime or a virgin cocktail. I also know someone for religious reasons that won't drink but has no problem with the taste of alcohol. For the latter, we usually go to a place that has like non-alcohol beer. Heck, some breweries are even doing non-alcoholic beers now.
I have never had alcohol in my life and it was never a problem. As a conservative Christian we had a choice in our families whether we want to drink or not, and I simply decided not to. Everybody understands and most other religious groups at the office admire it a little it as well.
Every person on earth has the choice whether to drink or not
That is correct, of course. My post was trying to say that but it came out the wrong way.
Of course, anyone on earth has that choice, regardless of faith or culture.
And Jesus while here chose to have a sip or two. Just saying.
Not a problem. Social media and the movies way overhype the drinking/party culture in finance. Most people do their work and go home. At the occasionally happy hour just get a water. No one will care whatsoever that you don't drink
It’s a non-issue. I’ve had plenty of colleagues in both IB and PE who don’t drink, and no one cared one iota. Just order a Coke and move on.
yeah if you asked me who in my office doesn’t drink at work events i literally wouldn’t know or remember
Nobody can tell what is in the glass you hold. You are overthinking this.
This is deep, I like it.
When you point it out, yea holy shit it's deep
I quit drinking awhile ago after my weight loss journey, I was more anxious about not being able to "go out" anymore but it's a non-issue as long as you don't have extremely poor social skills
I’ve had multiple colleagues who don’t drink for either religious or personal reasons. No one cares.
This will be a non-issue
If he’s not buying you a drink then just get a club soda at the bar
sometimes I wish I just didn't drink at all. Like others said, no one will care or hold it against you. People usually want to have a good time in this industry and I've found are generally respectful.
Honestly I used to work at a small CRE brokerage firm and when I time mentioned I didn’t drink, the brokers acted like I shot someone… then when I moved to REPE (where educated people actually work) they respected tf out of me. Never gave me an issue since my brokerage days.
It isn’t a big deal and honestly you don’t owe anyone an explanation. If you drink a Coke, nobody will notice.
