I don’t think my boss likes me. Should I say something?
Hi guys, I’m interning at this PE shop and I don’t think my boss doesn’t fuck with me. He ignores all my emails and texts. When he asks for suggestions he doesn’t listen to mine, but if an intern makes the same suggestions he will. More instances like such. Before you guys say maybe because you suck at the job — I don’t think that’s it. I always turn in my work when some interns can’t complete it. The modeling assignments I help my interns with the work. I never missed a day when others have. I think I’m killing it. I spoke to my other interns and they don’t seem to have that issue with him. He’s overall a great guy, so I’m confused. I wouldn’t care because I got my experience and resume builder. I needed this for the sake of the connections he has and opportunities(we don’t get paid so he promised us this). Anyways, my question is should I say something? Ask for like a performance review so I don’t sound like a pussy asking why don’t you like me? Or just cut my losses? Am I overthinking it?Any advice would be appreciated
it sounds like at an emotional level, your boss doesn't trust/respect you...and not much you can do about emotions. You can ask for a performance review, and ask for specific instances where you did the wrong thing or made mistakes,so you can focus on improving areas where you are weak, to try to elucidate that his bais might be emotional rather than logical. However, you will be best served my lateraling to another boss where you have a better emotional connection (i know, this sounds lame, but we are all emotional human beings...and like it or not, emotions drive most of our decisions)
Sadly, it's a small shop so he's the only boss. I'll probably ask him at the end of the internship in a few weeks for a performance review. I'm thinking "Hey boss man can I get a performance review so I can know the areas where I can improve for my future?" What do you think
i would suggest...the next time another intern makes a suggestion that you had previously made and been ignored...point it out, in a positive way.
(in front of the team including the boss and john the intern) "yes, John the intern, i absolutely agree...i believe i suggested this last week"
What is your experience level compared to the other interns? Did the other interns have previous IB internships where this might be your first internship? That might affect this.
Maybe another intern saying the same thing in your bosses eyes means two people share the same view, not just one, and thus it holds more weight?
Ask for feedback now. Showing initiative to improve is a really good indicator.
I wouldn’t stress too much about a guy who told you he would “pay you in connections, not money” liking you
Hahaha, that's how PE jobs do it. They know kids want the experience so they capitalize on it.
Yeah, I mean I get it, but it's still fucked
This 100%.
Do you socialize well with him?
Usually, we don't talk at work much. We have had a few conversations, but they always felt abrupt
Sounds like a no. What about the other interns? They socialize with him? With you?
I sometimes try to ask for information or help on a topic they're passionate about. This can become twenty minutes of them talking and me nodding, but they leave with an overall positive experience. In other words, stroking their ego to build a relationship.
Examples: I'm looking for a new gym, do you know a good one? I was thinking of buying a new suit, do you know a good place?
Haham sad reality but a lot of getting started in the business world is a lot of dick stroking, I'll try that next time we meet -- just listen to him talk
I'd view it more as showing you respect them and truly listen to them, aka buying in.
Maybe he doesn't like the fact that you are more ambitious and capable than he was at your age. So he's trying to show you some harshness of the world? Shouldn't stress about this...
I sure hope that’s the case. Thanks my man!
