Ideas for summer

I was wondering what to do this summer to make best use of my time. I am a penultimate year student, I have a short summer internship related to restructuring consulting.

I am interested in that career field and will make graduate scheme applications in august to t&r/strategy consulting and so was wondering what I could do in the 5 weeks I have free this summer. I was thinking of cold emailing small restructuring firms to work/volunteer or just working a job, what would you recommend. Otherwise I’d just go to the gym a lot.

Maximizing your summer effectively, especially as a penultimate year student eyeing a career in restructuring consulting, is crucial. Here are some tailored recommendations based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Cold Emailing Small Restructuring Firms: This is a solid strategy. Not only does it show initiative, but it also provides you with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in your field of interest. When drafting your emails, be concise, express your genuine interest in restructuring consulting, and highlight any relevant skills or experiences. This approach can lead to valuable networking opportunities, mentorship, or even a volunteer position that could enrich your resume.

  2. Working a Job: If you opt for a job outside your field, try to find one that can still add value to your career. For instance, roles that enhance your analytical skills, client interaction, or even project management can be beneficial. Every experience can be a learning opportunity if framed correctly.

  3. Professional Development: Consider dedicating some time to professional development. This could involve taking online courses related to restructuring consulting, strategy consulting, financial modeling, or any other relevant skill. Websites like Coursera, Udemy, or even the WSO Elite Modeling Package offer courses that could bolster your knowledge and make you a more competitive candidate.

  4. Networking: Use this time to expand your professional network. Attend industry webinars, virtual conferences, or local events. LinkedIn can be a powerful tool for connecting with professionals in your field of interest. Engage with content, join relevant groups, and don’t hesitate to reach out to people for informational interviews.

  5. Gym and Personal Development: While focusing on your career is important, personal well-being should not be overlooked. Regular exercise, like going to the gym, can improve your physical and mental health, enhancing your overall productivity. Additionally, consider reading books or listening to podcasts related to your career interests or personal growth.

  6. Volunteering: If finding work in a small restructuring firm proves challenging, consider volunteering in roles that can indirectly support your career goals. This could involve community service that allows you to develop soft skills like leadership, teamwork, and communication.

Remember, the key is to balance your time between gaining professional experience, networking, skill development, and personal well-being. Each of these activities can contribute to your overall profile, making you a more attractive candidate for graduate scheme applications in restructuring and strategy consulting.
