Idk how to use PTO

I’m getting to the point where I need a vacation, but tired of using PTO for 7-day benders with buddies from undergrad. Anyone have any interesting ways to use PTO? Mentors of mine have recommended everything from going solo to another country to professional treats down to the jungle of Costa Rica (idk…).

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some interesting ways to use your PTO:

  1. Travel and Cultural Immersion:

    • Travel through India: Experience life in a different cultural and economic setting.
    • Hike the Pacific Coastal Trail: Join a friend for a segment of this scenic route.
  2. Professional Development:

    • Internships: Consider a 6-month internship in a field of interest, such as VC, e-commerce, or digital advertising.
    • Coding Projects: Move to a developing country and work on coding projects, especially if you have some coding experience.
  3. Personal Growth:

    • Solo Travel: Explore a new country on your own to gain new perspectives and experiences.
    • Retreats: Attend professional or wellness retreats, such as those in Costa Rica, to rejuvenate and gain new insights.
  4. Work-Life Balance:

    • Long Weekends: Take a few long weekends throughout the year to avoid burnout and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

These suggestions can help you make the most of your PTO by combining relaxation, personal growth, and professional development.

Go to somewhere in nature and go hike or do another outdoor sport (ATV, kayak, snorkel, dive etc). Salt Lake City, Vermont, Maine, Boulder or Patagonia if you’re feeling like traveling abroad.

Having a generic wild night out (where nothing actually notable happens) at some generic yuppie bar just in a new city sounds boring as hell to me. Go have an adventure somewhere.
