Internship offer...
I got one! I just got back from the firm's SLP (PwC/Deloitte) a few days ago, and got an internship offer via phone call with an offer package soon to follow in the mail. I'm pretty stoked that my hard work has paid off and now I can relax for the next two years of college. The only remaining question is office location as this one is out of state (think NYC/LA/Chicago) and the other I'm expecting to receive is in my home state of FL. Hopefully they give me a little bit of time to decide.
Awesome! Congrats
Congrats! You typically get about two weeks to respond, so make sure you stay on top of things and negotiate for more time if you have to. Take the internship very seriously - your performance may determine whether you get thrown on whatever client needs an extra body, or whether someone requests you be placed on their engagement because you did a great job.
Keep killing it at school - you now have a unique opportunity to do some things with your life that you won't have for very long. What you do now can position you for your next step after public accounting, so don't slack off. And as soon as you're eligible to start sitting for the CPA, drop everything else in your life you possibly can and get it done ASAP.
Here's to the future. Congrats again.
Thanks to both of you for the congratulations. I am expecting an offer package in the mail "within a few weeks," so I have at least that long to respond I suppose. I will definitely take the internship seriously no matter which firm I choose. I found some online excel classes, I figure this is the most prep I can do ahead of time.
What did you mean by this? Did you mean I have an opportunity to not have to worry about really being crazy with my classes? I definitely will take the CPA as soon as I hit the 120 credits, because the other city requires you to have 150 to sit, so I need to finish before I start there, and then I can use reciprocity and just have a FL license. If I end up having to take some sections in the other city, anything I've taken with less than 150 credits becomes invalid. What I mean is that you will likely be in a position with no responsibilities but your classes and part-time job. Don't waste your time and energy - do something worthwhile with it, whether that be something fun or something hard.
Thats what I thought. I'm gonna try to do a mix of both, but once I hit that 120 credit mark, it will shift heavily to the CPA.
Random side note: any idea on how much you can allow your GPA to drop before they start considering redacting offers? I currently have about a 3.9 overall, 3.8 accounting. Wondering how many B's I can get before they start wondering if something's amiss.
Get it up to 3.9 in both and keep it there. Don't think about letting it drop - you'll definitely regret it later. Those numbers stick with you forever.
Congrats. You will do fine. Work hard so you have the chance of transferring into another group if audit is not where you want to be long-term. I agree with 808 about GPA...I let my GPA drop after getting an offer and I regret it because having a strong GPA allows you to have more option and everybody loves having options.
Thanks for the congrats. I don't think I could mentally let my GPA drop like that. I'd feel dirty lol. I meant more so to like a 3.5-3.6ish. But now I think I might just strive for A's anyway, but just try to not stress and remind myself I have an offer so not to worry about a B if it happens.
This offer is for Chicago, I'm expecting another one for FL (my home state), so I have a bit of a decision to make. Wanna try out the big city life, but nervous about leaving all my friends that I've known since I was 10 and family behind.
Thanks! Yeah, I think I'll take 808's advice. While I really don't see it happening, I may end up wanting to do an MBA or something, so I guess I might as well make the GPA stay high while I can. I was also thinking about slacking on the GMAT (the MSA program at my school isn't very hard to get into), but for similar reasons I will probably try to work at it pretty hard.
However, my next spring, my energy will shift to the CPA, even if it does mean a slight grade drop. I want to knock out one section before the summer internship starts if possible. I really need to have it done if/before I move to Chicago, because there you need 150 hrs to sit, while in FL you need 120, so if I can finish it all before I move, I can just have a FL license and use reciprocity to practice in Chicago. If I only complete a section or two here, and then have to finish it in Chicago, my scores from FL will be invalid because I took them with only 120 hrs.
For grad school or applying to other jobs...GPA should have no influence on transferring internally because the firm would base it on your reviews/rating
