My god. I haven't watched a show in a long time that has pissed me off as much as Inventing Anna. This bitch finessed people out of so much money by being a narcissistic sociopath.
I love committing white collar crime as much as anyone, but holy shit, Anna Delvey is just annoying. If I had a friend who allegedly had a $60mm trust fund but failed to be able to pay for anything when she needed to, I would become immediately sussed out. Oh, you wanted to go to the most expensive hotel in Moracco but none of your cards worked and then you said you wanted to order the 20 course meal? Are you kidding me?
She was also just rude as shit. I understand why her girl friends stuck around with her, because she was getting them into nice restaurants and giving them fancy clothes. But if anyone tried to guilt trip me into doing things for them, I would punch them in the throat.

It also just doesn't make any sense how City National Bank and Fortress got through any diligence and were like yeah, these bank statements clearly made in Microsoft Word look good.

I started watching solely because of the title, I was very intrigued - how is it "Inventing"? I downloaded it on The Pirate Bay and was hooked. To be honest, I was even a little sad that it ended. It's been a long time since I've been so moved by a movie. All disparage Anna, a German of Russian descent, who was able to fool around with a rich man, and I liked her wit, confidence, effrontery. Well, not everyone is given to it, and she was able to.
Neff was fucking insufferable. Probably the most unlikable character in the show, right after Anna.
Also, Anna sounded like Tommy Wiseau.
Completely agree OP (in fact I was the one who posted the other thread 17th Feb). I had many issues with the show, but chief among them was how if a man is swindling women (eg Tinder Swindler) they’re victims, yet shows/movies like Inventing Anna and Hustlers praise women swindling men as some type of feminist power play?
Interestingly I’d read the Rachel girl’s book a couple of years back - not surprisingly she portrays herself quite differently in her own book (says she doesn’t care about materialistic stuff etc) and is apparently angry at Netflix. Imagine the truth lies somewhere in between.
And yeah the Neff character… urgh. I think Shonda Rhimes actually intended for her to be sympathetic somehow - but she ends up being a stereotype of “Gen-Z snowflake” - works in a hotel but thinks she’s way too good for it and is destined for Hollywood, pulls out the racism card with Rachel when race hadn’t even been in the conversation etc.
Also a final note on the Fortress stuff - I think actually in reality Anna got nowhere near securing the $20m loan. She did con $100k out of another bank to pay for Fortress’ DD - however Fortress refunded her half the money as they were unable to verify so many things and declined her loan application relatively early on. She did actually flirt with the Fortress banker though (except he was a black guy rather than a blonde white guy).
Tinder Swindler scammed ordinary women into taking personal loans. Anna tried to scam banks and PE firms. So maybe a bit more people root for Anna cause apparently everybody hates bankers nowadays. but anyway, Anna is not portrayed in the positive light exclusively. there are two points of view: scammer/criminal and hustler/somebody who almost fooled bankers and exposed the true nature of rich NYC social circles. Tinder Swindler is also not necessarily bad, and the movie about him shows that some people support him and call these girls gold diggers who deserve what they got, which is a valid point of view. so both personas and both movies show both sides of the coin.
