Is it possible to pledge a frat and recruit as a soph?

Title. Current sophomore at non target state school that places maybe ~5 a year in IB. I’m hoping to break into IB but I also want to pledge a social fraternity that has a pretty rigorous pledging process. Is it at all possible to have these two commitments at the same time or will I have to give up one?

Yes. Class, homework, & pledging will feel like at lot at your age, but when you're old as shit like me you'll look back on all of the free time you will still have during it fondly. Everything in perspective. Learn time management now, how to deal with fake fire drills, and how to excel in social situations. And get laid. Win-win-win-win.

Second this. If anything, having a more active social calendar will make recruiting easier for you. Will help you with behavioral components that can’t be studied (i.e. having a personality).

Not worth it. Trust me. My cousin pledged his sophomore year at a large state school and had everything going for him, high GPA, urge to get into banking, ETC. He started pledgeship and his GPA dropped to a 2.4 and now he works back office at a consumer bank in Columbus, Ohio. I transferred to a big state school from a Jesuit College this fall and looked at joining a fraternity, but decided to just spring rush and lock in since this semester is the most important for sophomores. In my opinion, its just not worth it, wait it out for spring rush and if you have friends in the frats you like you'll be fine.

(Plus the women you'll meet as a banker will be 10x better than the ones you meet in a fraternity)

Was offered to rush during my sophomore year for an unofficial / social frat at my school. Got asked during freshman and sophomore year because a childhood friend's cousin was the President or something and he kept the door open for me during his last two years there (which was my freshman / sophomore year).

Their parties were mostly sausage fests and one of them died of alcohol poisoning a year before I started school (or drugs, never got the full story). Our school's greek life wasn't viewed positively by most people. It was a nerdy, commuter school and some of the frats (not the one I had connections with) were known to be creeps to girls. So that played a part in me not caring for the frat life.

Surprisingly, a lot of the guys at the fraternity I was offered to rush have done very well career wise though. Been in class with a few of them and I thought most of them were retarded. Found out years later they all cheated a lot on exams and maintained high GPAs that way.
