Lake House Towns in VT?

Starting to scope out a potential vacation house purchase.

I grew up in Boston area and the family house is on Winnipesaukee, so I love the lake, but that is way too much of a hike from Manhattan. No real interest in out East cuz the folks already live in a beach town south of Boston.

I’ve kind of settled on southern Vermont (~3 hours from NYC and Boston, close to good skiing) and am looking around for towns like Gilford or Meredith NH where you can find a good lakefront spot with a nice town. I’m sure there are similar communities in Vermont, and would def appreciate any suggestions!

Lake Raponda in Wilmington is small. Other than that you are heading towards the Rutland area for Lake St Catherine and Bomoseen. I have spent a lot of times at Winni in those areas and still do, the same with Southern Vermont. Similar towns aren’t in Southern Vermont, those towns are nicer in NH.

VT isn’t bad, it just isn’t the same. The lakes aren’t built up enough (commercially like Winni) and the towns don’t focus on the lake. You can get nice lakefront, but it isn’t the same vibe.

It is great for vacationing, but not the same feeling as Winnipesaukee.
