Last Days of the Roman Empire

"ESPN announced tonight that broadcaster Robert Lee will not call the University of Virginia’s first home football game of the season, as originally planned, 'simply because of the coincidence of his name,' which he shares with the Confederate icon"

Controversial

Is it? Does it affect your daily life in any way, shape, or form?

Trust me, I think it's all a bit ridiculous too, but I have yet to have "PC culture" impact my day to day whatsoever. Does it matter to either of us if this guy announces the game or not? Would either of us watch a bad college football team's first game in the first place?

Anti-PC hysteria is almost as annoying as PC hysteria. Everyone just needs to chill.

You have some real nerve to speak sense on a forum like this. This community isn't meant for rational debate, move along.

Some people are sensitive to woke discussions.

And yes, it impacts all of us. It's thought and speech control. ESPN is trash. Hope they get sued by the Asian guy for discrimination. Icing on the cake.

Woke...

ESPN moving a guy from one game to another because his last name might offend people is dumb, but it's hardly thought and speech control. It's just another eyeroll at a company that, as you said and I agree with, is trash these days. Apparently the guy himself didn't want to do the game because he was just waiting to get trolled and heckled online.

It's not "insanity" or "the last days of the roman empire." It's just a clickbait headline, prime for clickbait websites, that you roll your eyes at and then move on with your life.

ESPN felt the need to move a guy because people could be offended. Yeah, that's an issue.

We tear down historic monuments because people are offended. We have trigger warnings. People get canned for writing articles on a sanctioned company site seeking alternate opinions. AirBNB is refusing service to people they deam "hateful". Google is playing with search engines to remove sites. Facebook is censoring conversations.

Yeah, this shit isn't showing up and punching any of us in the face, but pretending like it doesn't impact us is false. It's insidious.

ESPN did it because they, and Robert Lee himself, were afraid of internet trolls and memes. Slightly different, but still ridiculous. Still, who is it an issue to?

  1. I'm not sure why we have monuments to traitors on federal property to begin with. Seems like something fit more for a museum, no?

  2. Do trigger warnings for micro-aggressions or whatever actually exist outside of freshman gender studies classes and tumblr? I'm with you on their absurdity, but I think their existence is entirely overstated. Happy to admit I'm wrong on this, but I've never encountered one nor do I think I know anyone who has either.

  3. The rest of that is all private companies doing what they will. If you don't agree with them, don't patronize them.

"TNA"Yeah, this shit isn't showing up and punching any of us in the face, but pretending like it doesn't impact us is false. It's insidious.

But there's also the problem of just encouraging the further growth of "Over-Reaction and Outrage Culture." @PeterMBA2018" says he was trying to make a joke with his headline, so I'll give him that, but the right has been over-reacting and being outraged and offended as much as the left these days.

ESPN certainly has an agenda and apparently lacks a backbone if they're afraid of the "dank meme potential," but is this really something to get fired up about or even concerned about? When every single thing is offensive and anger-inducing, then nothing is.

"m8"What is Anti-PC hysteria?

Over reacting to a dumb PR move by a known left-leaning company is and claiming it is a sign of the "the last days of the roman empire"

It's just a dumb PR move

Yeaaaa, its not like he was fired, he just got bumped to the Pitt/Youngstown State game, which will definitely be a better game. Cavs were like 2-10 last year and they're playing William and Mary. Not saying that this isn't a bit odd, but the cries for PC Culture should probably look somewhere else, plenty of other more relevant shit going on.

Man Asian guys really have it rough. They have to pay for the sins of 19th century Confederate generals. #oppressedasians

“Elections are a futures market for stolen property”

This is what people are missing, the dude asked to be taken off of the broadcast, ESPN complied. This shouldn't even be a story, but in today's age where individuals are in a rush to assail liberal "agendas", I am not surprised it is.
