Living in NYC expenses

When making the move to NYC its easy to get caught up in the hype of what can be, but what is something that all need to know once they get there.

We all know its reputation for being expensive but aside from rent, what other expenses are there? What's it like during different times of the day? What are areas to avoid at all costs, aside from times square? What are some of the worst places to live within Manhatten?

I worked in the Bryant Park area during my banking years and lived near Herald Square for ease of commute - would submit that is the worst part of Manhattan in which to live.
