My guess is Dan had trouble adjusting to the wife's ex-husband being one of the most powerful men in the world or didn't realize how much work it is to have that much money (going from an unknown school teacher to attending charity events, having people treat you differently etc. would be exhausting). I'd probably have a complex if I married the ex-wife of one of the most powerful men in the world too.
He's only powerful because people give him power. I'd kick him in the nuts no matter how much money has, unless he paid me handsomely not to do so.
