Bought a manual before undergrad (lived in a rural area). Moved to socal for undergrad. Got sick of driving in traffic in about 10 seconds.
If you're in a place where you can have fun, manual all the way. Otherwise, automatic.
Ehhh, I see proper applications for both.
High end luxury car? (7 series, Mercedes S-Class, Bentley, what have you) I'd do automatic regardless of where I lived.
Supercar? (Aventador, AMG SLS, Pagani, higher end ferraris) give me paddle shift. Ultimate performance is ultimate performance and dual-clutch paddle shifting is faster than manual, any way you hack it.
Vintage car or american muscle I'll take a manual. Just for the spirit of it.
If I live in a huge city? Auto all day.
On the top of a mountain? Manual for sure.
I hate the binary mindset that there's only one right answer. I like both for different things. It all depends.

People who feel like driving an automatic ride is for females are:
A) Stuck in the 70's and have hairy chests.
and/or
B) Are closet homosexuals. I mean, unless you're a homo, why would you want to have that dick shaped gear-lever in your hand all the time. Shit is suspect.

You know, I actually didn't had this in mind. I was going to say that the manual wasn't efficient in the sense that, drinking a cofee while driving to work was not possible (or very difficult).

Manual all the way. You see, I'm one of the rare purists that actually likes driving. Traffic - don't really give a shit. My grandfather was on the beaches of Iwo Jima - can't picture him complaining about "clutch leg." If you're one of those "Point A to B" car guys who doesn't care what/how they drive; you are missing out. One mode of driving is a subtle art, the other is something that teenage girls can do while texting. A flappy-panel gearbox is 'OK' in some sports cars, but overall I'd prefer to keep my clutch.
I like to inject myself with food. Who needs chewing and tasting anyway. Taste buds are way over rated. Besides its a whole lot faster and I don't have to brushmy teeth. ever.

Auto, because gridlock + manual transmission = my left leg starts to look like my right arm.
Automatic turns a vehicle into just a mode of transportation. Manual makes it a machine that you can bond and connect with. It makes driving fun... Disclosure: After 5 years of driving manual, I recently switched to automatic (not by choice). Driving is suddenly more boring than brushing teeth.
The only time i would consider an automatic is in a large luxury car (S-class, 7 series, Bentley, etc...)... Even in a large city a manual is not an issue. If you spend more than an hour in traffic daily going to or from work then you need to reconsider your mode of transport or how far you live from work. I suppose this changes if you are a suburban family guy/girl.
Automatic's aren't just for girls. They're for cars that are just meant for transport, or for drivers that don't want control over their engines. What I don't understand is spending so much money on a sports car (or a performance oriented car) and getting a transmission that disconnects you from the process and slows you down. It's not a macho thing. With an automatic you do not control the engine and where in the rev range you are... this matters for people who enjoy driving cars through corners and not just in a straight line.
I would get a manual even in a smaller non-performance oriented car. A manual gives you more control when trying to overtake other vehicles if your car has a small engine. In an automatic you have to floor it in order to keep the revs up and stay within the power band.
Next time you walk through a car park make a note of how many Porsche's, Audi R8's and similar cars have automatic transmissions. It's a sad state. I wouldn't even get a 335 BMW, or Audi S4 with an automatic transmission. What is the point?
I think most cars with performance aspirations (or marketing) will have dual clutch flappy paddle transmissions in the future. They're getting better and at least will give people who are used to automatics a sense of what they're missing out on. I just hope I can retain the option of having a proper manual.
To the guys who only like automatics... Have you ever turned the traction control off in your car?

Manual. Without question.
If you are going to be in traffic and/or the city, auto. It is just easier to manage. Some newer auto cars equal or exceed the performance of their manual versions.
If you don''t often deal with traffic, manual can be fun. But you really need enough space to take advantage of the car's engine.
Manual is a lot more fun and engaging. It also is a very good gauge of if I had too much to drink. But if I had a car in NYC, I would take auto w/o question. The traffic and stopping and going make manual a lot less fun and a lot more tedious. Not going above third gear unless on the FDR would be torture.
I'll likely never go back to automatic.

Manual is hot. With every gear shift you can actually feel the effect of what you're doing on the car and the consequences are amazing. For me, it makes me feel the power of the engine and how fast/slow the car responds to my commands. Nothing feels better than the jolt of downshifting. Says the girl who fell off a bridge in her own car.
If I am somewhere like Beijing...Eff that, I'm driving an automatic or finding someone to drive.
If you feel a jolt while downshifting, you're doing it wrong..
So you want to tell everyone you rev match?
Totally depends on the car. In a sporty car, I prefer a manual. In a truck or bigger car, I prefer an automatic.

face it, with your automatic you dont have the same kind of control over your car as a manual does
I can drive both, but it comes down to the car. When I got my car, for example, I was limited to getting my caras an Automatic Sedan if I wanted to get the AWD system in the car. Two years later, I could get the Coupe with AWD and Manual Transmission. It also comes down to need for me. I don't need an MT car at this point because I don't have much use for it.
And Relinquis, to answer your question oh hell yeah. I've done it a few times. My buddy races Nissans and Infinitis, so I've gotten to drive his cars with traction control on and with traction control off. It's a fun time. And then there was the month I spent studying winter driving. No traction control on an ice and snow course is a great way to really learn how to drive. It's a fantastic experience too because it forces you to learn how to drive.
