It doesn't matter how many of these McDonald's actually sells. The goal most likely is to find a solution for those situations where a group of people with one vegan is trying to find a place to eat. If McDonald's has one vegan option, that group of people can now go to McDonald's, whereas if McDonald's only serves non-vegan entrees, that group now goes somewhere else. The money lies in the non-vegans in this group, not the one vegan.
The correct answer is that they're virtue signaling. McDonald's has a poor name in progressive circles and it's a way to keep the progressive mob at bay.

The McVegan was first tried in Skandanavia where it quickly became a blockbuster menu item. I don't think this one item will upend anything, but overall there's a lot of money to be made in vegan foods.

This is sth I've been wondering for a while. McD in Korea and China are fckin delicious and they have a super diverse menu. Not sure why it is so different.
The image of fast food is changing a lot and chains like McDonalds are spending a ton moving out of the "lowest cost producer" reputation into a more fast casual image. From what I've seen in the food & bev space vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free aren't going away (and I used to think gluten-free was for sure just a fad) especially among millennials who are humanizing everything from cows to dogs.
Too bad... I like tasting the animal's fear before it died when I bite into my meat :)
I think decisions like these by any fast food corporation should be applauded, as vegan food is something that other than being easier your system, it's really a very human way to provide yourself with nutrition. I love animals, I want them to live. Please also note that the human consious is really raised when you eat vegan food. Whenever you eat vegan food you are sending a message to yourself and other that you are being considerate and compassionate to other forms of lives on earth. Eat the food with least karma.

How can anyone be opposed to a fast food establishment changing their approach to give consumers more healthful food? From a business perspective, it is a good idea because the percentage of vegetarians and vegans has been growing substantially.
Aren't vegans pretty picky as to how their food is prepared? As in not using lard to cook their fries or have their vegan patties cooked on the same counter as beef patties. Should be interesting to see how the franchises react from an operational perspective.
