MD Farted on My Face

Hi everyone. This was a really a surprise to me. I’m an intern this summer in M&A at an EB in NYC. I worked incredibly hard to get where I am, all the way from a non target state school.

I spent countless hours studying and preparing myself for this internship, and up until this happened I thought it was going very well. I had bonded well within my class and with the junior bankers, but an MD came to my desk today and asked me for a seemingly easy one-off task. It was a very straightforward ask, and I wanted to get it back to him as fast as possible. I pulled it together in about an hour and sent it to him.

Almost as soon as I sent it, the MD stormed out of his office in a rampage, heading straight for me. I figured I had formatted it poorly or something and was going to get a proper chew out, but instead, once he got to my desk, he grabbed the back of my head, turned around and ripped a giant fucking smelly fart right in my face.

I was in disbelief. Everyone saw it. He didn’t even say anything. In fact, he went back into his office and replied to my email with “looks good thx”.

Again, this is a top shop, and I never expected anything like this to happen. It almost seems endearing in hindsight. Just thought I should put this out there.

Congrats on Evercore - common occurrence here, some of the older MDs will even take their pants off before letting it rip in your face

Pink eye is assault

Next time you eat chipotle go in his office and return the favor

Return the favor or return the flavor?

Lmao this is both horrifying and honestly kind of iconic? I interned at a BB last summer and while no one ever literally farted in my face, I did get stuck doing a 60-page precedent deck overnight because an MD "felt like seeing some comps" at 11pm. Next morning he skimmed the cover slide, nodded, and said "solid effort" before asking the associate to start from scratch with a different layout.

The thing no one really prepares you for is how absurd the culture can get at these places. One day you’re terrified to send an email because your bullets aren’t perfectly aligned, the next day a grown man in a $5k suit cropdusts you as performance feedback.

That said… if he replied with "looks good thx," congrats I guess? You might’ve accidentally gotten initiated. Half the job is showing you can eat shit and keep smiling, and this just happens to be a more literal version of that.

If it happens again, you’re either getting a return offer or need to contact HR. No in-between

Welcome to elite finance, where a $2M comp MD will crop dust a $15/hr intern as a sign of affection. Truly a magical industry. Can’t wait for the podcast exposé in 10 years
