What should I do? It's only been a few hours but I already feel so empty and alone.

Holy shit. How old are you? You should break up with her, look how much control she has over your emotional happiness. I guarantee you she's not wallowing alone in self pity right now over you. If you guys are actually on a break right now, there's a 350% chance she's already banging someone else.

Matthew I really want to keep the relationship going but don't feel too happy these days with her.
Why do you want to keep the relationship going if you're not happy with her? That doesn't make much sense, unless you're just unhappy in general whether she's there or not.

My hunch is to dump her, but we probably need more information. Also, does 'on a break' mean you have license to go bang other women? If so, I would definitely do that for research purposes to get good comps to help evaluate the situation.

My advice is to bang as many chicks as possible while on break but judging by the rest of your post you are likely incapable of this and would probably just start crying.

If you define your long time girlfriend by her job (ie. "a banker") then you should not have been together in the first place

We're both juniors in college but recently got our internships. I've always been a little put off by her personality (very materialistic and competitive) but I never thought long-term would be an issue until we both ended up in banking.

If you have to question whether you're happy with her... then that means you're not really all that happy with her and it doesn't make sense to keep it going. Truthfully, if you guys are both going into banking, neither of you will have much time to commit to each other anyway. And if you have to make time to commit to someone (especially since for both of you, time is a rarity) then you should be sure that you actually both enjoy each other's company.

What I'm getting from reading your comment...

1.) At the minimum, you tolerated your girl being materialistic and competitive before you both started in IB. 2.) Now that both of you are starting in the same career, you find that you might need to break up with her, even though she said she would do anything to stay together.

Are you feeling insecure OP? Is she at a more prominent bank than you? I'm not calling you out to be an asshole, but you need to be honest with yourself.

You've been with this chick for a year (a year in college is like 5 in the real world) and decide three months before your internship starts that you don't want to date banker... quick news flash - neither of you are bankers yet, bro. You have a legitimate 14 months before the "future" even becomes a necessary thought. If you're unhappy then break up with her, but you're getting way ahead of yourself. Enjoy college, you only get to do it once.

Edit: There's a 1000% chance she's at a better bank than him.

Edit-Edit: Don't people have real life friends to talk to about this stuff?
