Motivation: Billionaire’s 394ft Yacht

“Does money motivate you?” is sometimes a question young monkeys face in banking interviews. On one hand, yes, of course it does. On another extreme, an unhappy millionaire is almost as common as a schizophrenic hobo. Though, perhaps billionaire Andrey Melnichenko can offer some advice.

To the common folk, Melnichenko appears to be just a regular Russian blessed by the fortunes of graft that contribute to most of Russia’s top .01%. The squinty-eyed, partly balding fellow made most of his money through a fertilizer monopoly. In 1999, he realized that finance also makes decent money and co-founded MDM Bank, which became one of Russia’s largest privately owned banks within ten years. Eventually, his oodles of money roped in Yugoslavian model Aleksandra.

Today, Melnchenko enjoys nothing more than knowing that he has a much more awesome mega yacht than rival Ruski billionaire, Roman Abramovich. I will not delve into too many details about Melnchenko’s 394ft yacht, dubbed “A,” but I will say that it has everything exquisite that you have never heard of. Take for instance the stingray hide furniture, $40,000 shower knobs, hand-stitched calf hide trim, or, my personal favorite, a rotating bed that offers a 360-degree view of any sunset.

So while money might not completely motivate you, “A” is the perfect excuse to grind out extra hard during your analyst years, just so, one day, you too may cruise the British Virgin Islands with your supermodel wife.

lol Lake Hopatcong

I have some buddies at Trinity and they tell me about some of the ridiculous things these guys do to their boats. One example that comes to mind is monogrammed appliances in the crew quarters. I'm talking about a $20,000 washer/dryer combo that no one ever sees because it's in the "servants" quarters.

What do you think is the best way to answer this question in an interview?

"Yes, absolutely, the reward is a motivator and I think pretending otherwise is dishonest. However, other aspects of this job are its main appeal, blah blah blah..."

$40,000 shower knobs? I nominate him for Secretary of Defense! If he can get shower knobs so cheap, I only wonder what he can do for the F-35!

Anyone see this in Malibu or in the SF bay a couple summers ago? Pretty surreal looking from afar... can only imagine the awesomeness of sailing the seven seas atop a kudu horn throne...

He would rather tool around Lake Michigan in his 10 foot Jon boat with his rusty Honda outboard, lol.

I was on a guy's boat in Portofino a few years back and he had 4 custom-made, monogrammed, etc., jet-ski's that hung off the side of the boat, 2 on either side.... super, super sick.
