need help here
Hi monkeys, I need some help here.
I have a boyfriend who works in investment banking. We both graudated last year and this is his first year in IB.
He was quite excited about the job but he is getting more and more despressed these days.
Basically he works 90-100hours per week and sometimes works at weekends too.
I can tell he is very tired and sleepy but I can do nothing for him.
I work in finance too but a different area so I dont really understand his work and the long hours.
I read the book Monkey Business and googled it ,, which led me to this forum...
I have a questions for the guys who have girlfriends here.. if you have the weekend off, what you would like to do? seeing a movie, playing xbox and relaxing at home or having some outdoor activities?
and... give me some tips about taking care of my monkey.. thanks (No Jokes thanks you)
Cook him food and provide sex, oral sex if he's tired. If you can handle that for 2-3 years you two should be relatively in the clear. If he says he wants to stay in IB for a career, pack your bags. But it doesn't sound like he will.
Ummm, lol, but yeah I'm basically serious. Why not ask him what he wants to do this weekend? Let him know you're fine with staying in if he doesn't feel like going out.
I'm not trying to be misogynistic, I know how to cook quite well and I would do the same if I had a girlfriend in IB (which I probably wouldn't, for relatively more misogynistic reasons).

Anyway, if he started this last year, you're halfway through already. Be patient, because he's stressed out and tired. It sucks to be pulling IB hours but most Americans are unhappy with their jobs for some reason or another. At least he'll be well compensated.
As for weekend stuff, I like golf and open water kayaking. The former can get frustrating if you suck but the latter is always pretty relaxing. I don't know if you two are into that but just throwing it out there.
The thing that you don't have in banking, that he needs from you at home is intimacy.
Banking is subtley competitive, and often feels really lonely. You have manically busy times, and then manically quiet times. In those quiet times, you can often reflect a lot, and have some pretty deep thoughts.
I was seeing a girl on my internship, only 8 weeks, but more intense than anything I'd experience before. I really appreciated just being able to talk to her like the human being I was forgetting I was.
You sound like a really good gf. A great book for recognising his pain is Golden Handcuffs - the most accurate description of year 1 in banking I've read (based on internship).
I start in July, and I already feel a little bit lonely just thinking about it.
Oh yeah, good point. I meant emotional intimacy as well...that's key. I'm just not so great at expressing that, lol.

Get him outdoors and force him to do some sports - that will get the endorphins pumping. Plus we all need as much sunlight as we can get. And yeah, a BJ is always nice.
