No Travel Reimbursement for Interview?

Is is abnormal for a firm not to cover or reimburse travel expenses for a final round interview? I've been interviewing with a niche, but reputable, AM firm, and they want me to fly in for final rounds at their office. I am currently located in a different part of the country. They provided extremely short notice and informed me that none of the expenses will be covered.

I have never encountered a company that didn't cover travel expenses for interviews, particularly on such short notice. Is this strange? It seems abnormal and has left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. In a decent role right now so don't need to move.

It is not normal. Reflects poorly on the company and shows what to expect going forward with them.

The poster formerly known as theAudiophile. Just turned up to 11, like the stereo.

A personal expense of $2k is hard for anyone, even some around WSO.  $2k from a company's budget is also known as budget dust.  No one will blink an eye.

Unless you have other reasons to pursue this place, I would pass.

Never experienced that. Might be the case if you applied for a role that was say NYC applicants only type thing and you are in a different part of the country. Doesn't reflect well on the company.

Very unusual and I would not proceed with this company.

It's like a bad first date... if this is how they are treating candidates imagine how they will treat you as an employee
