Pro Tip to win arguments that I've discovered

Recently, while engaging in not so civil debates on internet forums centric around finance, I've discovered a key phrase that will get you out of a bind that requires too much critical thinking to dig yourself out of.

When losing an argument regarding politics, racism, socioeconomics or any other "based" opinion, simply state:

"Sometimes, cultural and moral values must take place over fiscal, practical or humanitarian objectives for the good of society."

And do not clarify or respond to further discussion.

No

"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee

By definition of practicality, it is the right thing to do. Your statement is the opposite of a truism. It’s false by its very construction. Your line comes from the exact same stable as “my facts don’t care about your feelings,” which seems very contradictory when juxtaposed with your phrase. That which is practical is by necessity right, else it would not be practical. You’ll have to get a better catchphrase.

Practicality does not mean it's the right thing to do, merely that it's the most logical and/or easy. English must not be your first language. Furthermore, the principle of my argument is centric about the concept that my feelings don't care about your facts, as shown when I crown culture and morality above your petty economic, practical or humanitarian reasons.

Practicality boils down to “that which actually works in practice,” which is by definition the right thing to do. If you think culture is important, then that becomes the practical thing to do. It isn’t diametrically opposed to practicality as you posit. That’s what makes your statement nonsense.

I also didn’t misconstrue your original statement. I said that you were the sort of person who would in another circumstance say “my facts don’t care about your feelings” and would rely on a crutch like this when it is convenient to do so. I understand you very well.

pro tip: don't give a fuck about internet arguments

My life got better when I realized I didn't have to respond to poorly structured arguments on the internet. When someone replies and ignores the premise of the statement, or mischaracterizes your argument, or introduces tangents, or a million other bad debate practices, you just ... ignore them.

It's liberating.
