Pull Up Bars and TRX Straps

Per suggestions on WSO, I bought a pull up bar for a door frame.  It seems to work very well but this shit is tough to do.  Perhaps it just takes some practicing or pushing yourself or using the right method.  I have only tried it a few times, but I am a little embarrassed to say I can't get past 5 pull ups.  The pull up bar came with what looks like TRX straps.  I have a watched a few videos but I am not exactly sure how to get the most out if these things.

Anyone else here do pull ups/use TRX straps and do you have any suggestions?

As low as it might seem, 5 is actually a decent starting point. The vast, vast majority of Americans can't even do one. Make sure you're achieving full ROM and not using your neck and lower body to jerk yourself up. It will take some time to build up the reps, but if you can get into the mid to upper teens that is extremely impressive if it is with proper form. Also, every morning, do a dead hang for as long as possible- it works wonders for your shoulders, grip strength, and thoracic spine. Even better if you time yourself and try to beat your previous time. As for the TRX straps, they can be great for rows to add some variety in so you're not doing the same movement over and over. You can vary the difficulty by feet placement and then eventually add a backpack with books or something as a weighted vest. There are a lot of other pulling variations you can do with TRX straps, so I'd suggest looking those up and seeing which ones feel good and work for you. Biggest thing though is to be patient. It takes a long time to add even a few reps and there will be days you feel like you can barely do any. Good luck!

Thanks for the insight.  Prior to watching a couple of TRX videos, I stumbled across a video of some lady using some kind of strap for abs but it looks different from the TRX strap.  Sometimes it is described as an abs sling.  I think I am also going to get one of these.
