Puppy for NYC Apartment

Hey guys --

I want to get a dog for my apartment in Manhattan. Its approximately 1,000 SF and I have someone who can walk the dog and feed it during the day. Any suggestions? My gf suggested a corgi but I'm afraid it would shed everywhere. Thoughts?

Blue Staffordshire Pitbull - super cute and known as nanny dogs because of how non-aggressive and loyal they are. They need physical activity but that seems to be taken care of. If you want a smaller dog which is also sweet a Beagle isn't a bad option but they aren't great with kids (not sure if that's a current or soon-to-be issue). Last option I would go for is a Cocker Spaniel. Very sweet dogs but you'll have to hoover weekly.

Not really. If you get a small dog, walk it a few times a day, and take it to the dog park every other evening, its more than enough exercise. You can also take them to daycare a few times a week, its not much more expensive than having a walker come to your apt.

My recommendation is anything that doesn't shed, and stay away from dogs that have barking problems. Look into mini doodles/ golden or lab.

I guess if it's small. Seems like a lot of work to have a girl dog. Having a grown man dog in NYC is irresponsible unless you have lots of time and money.

Avoid pure bred. Our labs have torn 3 ACL's between the two of them.

If I could do it again, I'd probably go with a Maine Coon.

Why would you get a dog and force yourself to get up early, even on Saturdays and Sundays to walk it(EVERY WEEKEND). Then what are you doing to do when you want to travel, you either have to find a sitter, or take it to a kennel. You already have a girlfriend so why add to that responsibility and why is she not content with the affection you give her. I once showed(not unprovoked) a picture of my kid to a woman in her mid/late 30s, she pulls out a picture of her dog like it's the same fucking thing......"well this is my baby". Wanted to punch her in the face. People who treat dogs like kids or even humans should be shot. Sorry for the rant, not saying this is you. You can anthropomorphize your pet a little, but don't go over board.

Wait until you have kids and your life is already over before getting a dog.
