Putin is completely irrational and illogical

The two reasons he put forth are NATO expansion and "Nazis" committing a "genocide" of Russian speakers.

Russia effectively ruined Ukraine's chances of ever joining NATO or the EU by starting a forever war in the Eastern part of the country in 2014, because that would risk NATO/EU having to enter that war if Ukraine were to join.  He got his foreign policy goals accomplished in that war.  So why invade again?

Only 18 civilians died in the fighting in Ukraine in 2021, and this is a mix of deaths from pro-Russia forces, pro-Ukraine forces, and legitimate accidents.  So there is no "Nazi genocide" going on.  And even if there was, far right militias are only operating in the Eastern part of the country.  Why does he need to conquer every single city to get the Nazis?

So there's no good reason for doing this.  Putin gave up his economy and the future of his country.  He permanently damaged his support both from the oligarchs who are almost always on his side as well as the common people.  Russia has lost pretty much all its soft power.  The war is not going well at all and the only way Putin can win is if he turns the whole damn place into rubble like in Syria.

My SO's family all live in Russia, and they are gonna be the ones dealing with an economic collapse and severe repression of civil liberties. (15 years in prison for calling it a war and not a "special military operation")  And her family in the military might even have to kill or be killed themselves during this nonsense war.  So yes I am 'concerned'.

Nobody's saying he won't.  If he applies the Syria play book he will be the proud ruler of a pile of rubble in a few years.  We are saying he's dumb for ruining thousands of lives, destroying his economy, and weakening his own political power to control a country you claim is worthless.

Good analysis Drumpfy.
But do you realise that it’s years of the retarded woke policies that you support that have led to this situation? I hope that it makes you at least reflect a little bit.

And sorry for your wife’s family, as well as for all the Russians that don’t support Putin.
somehow it is not surprising that you are married to a Russian.

lol, I know it’s fun to blame everything on the libs and the wokes, but this is weak. Trump was impeached for withholding defense to the Ukrainians. Paul Manafort was working for the Kremlin in Ukraine when he was plucked to lead Trumps campaign.

Currently in Moscow:

  • Facebook and Twitter blocked
  • 15 year jail sentence for spreading “fake news”
  • liberal and international TV and radio blocked
  • 8000+ arrested for protesting

This is a Trump Republican’s utopia

"I don't know how to explain to you that you should care about other people."

That's funny because it really doesn't look any different than Canada, UK, US, just with inverted roles.

Drumpfy siding with Nazis to own ''white people'' even if it results in the Holy Light of nuclear fire erasing him from existance. OK

So America is bad because we "wasted money and lives in America and Iraq", but we should support Russia wasting money and lives in Ukraine because America is siding with Ukraine?

Anyone else would welcome Russian nukes so long that they end the woke empire?

You're the one who supports America being nuked.  I said this war is stupid and Putin never should have started it.

Yes, because it'd get rid of a gigantic pole of evil. Noticed how the great two scams of the past two years all of a sudden aren't relevant anymore? Coronavirus? Ukrainian refugees can move freely despite 30% vaccination rate. All of a sudden, lockdowns, masks, vaccinations don't matter anymore. We wasted two years 'following the science', a science that doesn't matter anymore if it means the great goal of the liberal elite: dismantle Russia and loot its natural resources.

Similarly, ''the climate crisis''. All of a sudden, coal is perfectly fucking fine, to the point that Germany is re-opening coal mines, despite having Groens in the government. Again, so long that serve the greater purposes of enriching the usual suspects.

Sometimes I come on this site and see the most misogynistic, idiotic, and myopic things from these guys who have no life and I almost give up on WSO. But thank you Drumphy for not giving a fuck about these people and saying what you believe in and what is true.

At this point, it's a herd mentality too. Let's all hate Drumphy, let's all be massively anti-liberal just because, etc.

That’s what you get when you post very regularly in a finance forum just promoting your political agenda, and never ever contributing any useful finance comment. If everyone did the same as him, this forum would disappear.

Bro, I have never shilled for AOC or Bernie.  And you accuse conservatives with more than three brain cells like UCSDThrowaway and IncomingIBReject of being "alt-left AOC shills" too.

Btw, Joe Biden just asked Vladimir Putin to mediate with Iran so that the US can buy oil from there.

Never happened.

I'm going to have to agree with Drumpfy on this one. T30Alumnus makes absolutely no sense. He hates on liberalism and then disses the GOP. T30alumnus is likely from another country and is jealous of the wests success and wants to see the west fall. Just say you're anti-America and avoid all the other politics. Also, America doesn't "lose" wars. They deploy a small % of their military to fight against other countries full force military and then withdraw when it doesn't work out how they want. If the USA wanted to they could win any war if they went full scale. Modern American "wars" aren't really wars. It's called deploying 50,000 soldiers to fight a whole country with millions of citizens, similar to what Putin is doing in Ukraine. I find it hilarious when people think the Taliban really "beat" the US. The USA could easily wipe any country out if they really wanted to.

There is some speculation from Putin's recent appearances that he may be ill. If he knows that he won't have that many years left he may be pushed to build his legacy. He can achieve his goal of carving out a piece of Ukraine into a buffer state and/or permanently deter Ukraine from joining NATO. Once he is no longer in power the West will be eager to rebuild the relationship with Russia since everyone sees Ukraine evasion as Putin's personal war. Putin may be perfectly rational and logical.
