Quit current internship ?

Hi everyone!. Junior at a Canadian target. Currently doing a corporate development and strategy internship at a Oil and Gas company(it's a 12 month internship). started this position in May. I absolutely hate this job and should I quit this job after 4 months if I get a better opportunity for the fall and next winter(Co-op opportunities). Anybody quit their internship before?I have about 6 months to go for this job .I feel like the opportunity cost is pretty high and I hate my life. I have no intention of going back to Oil and gas industry or the company itself. any opinion would be appreciated. Thanks!

Why is it frowned upon if he found an internship that he enjoys more? I understand the commitment aspect, but if he kept this internship for four months then left, I don't see a negative issue?

Unless your "better" internship is with God, Bill Gates, or Vladimir Putin, I can't see how you can beat the experience offered by a 12-month O&G internship. You could go into banking, trading, research, asset management, literally anything you want simply because you'll have 12 months of front office experience in a finance-driven field before even graduating. Those IBD internships are 3 months of networking, whereas your 12 months will be much harder to ignore anywhere you take it. Unless you're unpaid and are incurring significant cost to show up every day and the "better" internship pays you well, I can't see how you can rationalize this.

What do you mean when you say corporate development? "Front office" means "people in a money-generating operating group." Usually those groups have sales personnel who interact with clients, along with research, strategy, finance, IT, and related functions meant to drive profit. FO doesn't only mean IBD - credit card companies have a front office and so does every company that relies on selling something to exist. So when you say "development," that's usually what that means: "develop" the business by bringing in more money.

If you're doing something different, then elaborate on what your group does so we can give you better feedback.

I can't see why you would be. You'd be better placed than virtually everyone who didn't get an IBD internship, assuming that's what you want to do. And even then, you're a great candidate - I'd say a shoe-in - for research and even trading roles at a bank. Energy sector experience is always a positive and you'll have 1 full year of it. Is your current firm very small, unknown, or only loosely related to O&G? You should elaborate further on your profile and relevant details of the company.
