Regional Offices
Interned at a BB in NYC and did not get a return. FT recruiting came and went and I was only able to secure an offer in AM at a regional office (Chic/LA/Dallas) of another (larger) BB. While I feel incredibly fortunate to have secured this offer, I am still bummed as I really wanted to work in NYC. I was wondering what I can do to best set myself up to lateral to NYC in the next 1-2 years and how are regional offices perceived.
Hard to tell without knowing specific office. As long as it’s a big city, you’re probably fine. Companies with offices in tier 3 or worse cities, I would 100% avoid at all costs. Trying to move from a random city that isn’t finance heavy into a major market is difficult because of the amount of competition/different lifestyles in the smaller cities
It was one of the three that I listed so still a major city but definitely a much smaller market than NYC. I am from Westchester so from the NYC metro so I am assuming that will help me try to lateral.
Bigger cities and with local ties should be fine but much easier if already in the city you want to be in even if at a slightly a lesser firm
I can speak to Chicago - there's a good network and presence of AM overall in the city, so if you'll be fine there. Networking will be the biggest thing you can do, knock out a solid few years of performance + networking and you'll be just fine.
You’ll be fine. I hail from a T2 maybe T3 city and was able to transition to NY no problem after 1.5 years.
Focus on your job and network, and you will be in a good spot when it comes to NY recruiting.
