Request time off work to attend Trumps Inauguration? Will this fly in IB?

Really want to attend (probably the last based president this country will have).

Feel a little weird requesting it as the reason for being out of office and unavailable from my deal teams.  There's a lot of internationals in my group (who are all left leaning of course) and my staffer is a female who was visibly upset the day after the election.

How would you feel if someone requested this?  Should I include in my out of office email response?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights on requesting time off in investment banking:

  1. Timing and Communication:

    • It's crucial to plan and communicate your time off well in advance. Mention your request to your staffer about 8-10 weeks out, then follow up about a month out, and remind your teams closer to the date.
  2. Reason for Time Off:

    • While the reason for your time off is personal, it's generally advisable to keep it professional and neutral, especially in a diverse and potentially politically sensitive environment. You might want to avoid specifying the political nature of your request in your out-of-office email.
  3. Handling Team Dynamics:

    • Given the political sensitivities and the diverse makeup of your team, it might be wise to frame your request in a way that focuses on personal time or a family event rather than a political event. This can help avoid any potential discomfort or tension within the team.
  4. Out of Office Email:

    • Your out-of-office email should be straightforward and professional. Simply state that you will be out of the office and provide contact information for urgent matters. There's no need to specify the reason for your absence.
  5. General Advice:

    • Try to avoid missing significant work events or deal-related activities. If something critical comes up, be prepared to adjust your plans or ensure that your responsibilities are covered.

In summary, plan ahead, communicate clearly, and keep the reason for your time off neutral to maintain professionalism and team harmony.

I disagree with you, but you're fine so long as you don't get on TV.  Seriously, just keep a low profile.  Book the time now too.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.
