SELF IMPROVEMENT

what are some ways you can work on improving yourself while working a full time job? any ideas or tasks that you are trying to accomplish to make you better in your field or career?

what motivates you to take on challenges and work on yourself?

any thoughts would be appreciated.

I don't know you, but if you are not doing the following, I would encourage you to start with this:

  1. Get rid of bad habits (smoking, drinking lots of caffeine, etc.)
  2. Develop a regular exercise routine (makes you stay focused and develops discipline)
  3. Eat good food
  4. Put your life in order (get rid of things you don't need keep things neat and organised)

Assuming you have done the things above (which should give you more focus and long-term energy), you could set some long-term goals of where you picture yourself in 5-10 years (or even in 30 years). Then ask yourself how you are going to get there and make a plan accordingly. Maybe you will have to expand your knowledge, maybe you will have to expand your network, or maybe something else - it aIl depends on your goals (which imo will be easier to achieve if you do the first 4 steps first)

Hope it helps :D

Consider professional certifications. There's a ton of crap out there, (Look at this list, there are around 200: https://www.finra.org/investors/professional-designations ) and you really need to do your research since 90%+ are crap, but the good ones can really help your career, and are generally designed to be taken while working full-time, since most require a work experience component. (I hope you don't have kids) In AM the CFA Charter is clearly the top dog, with the FRM and CAIA likely taking up the rest of the podium. The CIMA is pretty well regarded, but viewed as a lightweight version of the CFA exams. There are other good specialist exams, but you really have to have a desire to know the topic to make them work, and they're generally add-ons.

In WM the CFP is generally the most well regarded since you're more likely to be dealing with IDGRATs than earnings statements, but most of the rest still applies. I apologize, I don't really know what's best in your field. RPA (Real Property Administrator from BOMI) maybe?

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.
