Dumb question but, can you do online sports betting if you're in state where it's legal and believe it's legal in New York? Also, do you guy have any interesting strategy where you consistently make money betting on sports apart from the usual line shopping for arbitrage?

Thanks, heard some bank had a policy of no gambling as an analyst (think it was before online betting was legalized in nyc). Although im not a full time analyst yet, just wanted to make sure before I start betting even as an incoming analyst

Absolutely not a dumb question at all. Yes, you can definitely do online sports betting in states where it's legal, and New York is one of them.
Just pick winners. Recently I've been avoiding taking bets that will lose so that I can focus on the bets that will hit.
Check out the paper by Tobias Moskowitz (AQR) where he applied the same risk factors in equity markets to sports betting. Idk of enough evidence after that to justify any viable quant strats for sports bets, but still very interesting
Unless you have a gambling problem / are betting insane amounts of money I don’t see how this is an issue. My analyst class was always talking about what games we had money on over the weekend.
