“Stop listening to strangers on the internet”

~ a stranger on the internet

It’s not like I go to this website for actual career advice. It can be a good place bounce ideas off several people at once, but ultimately I go to mentors or peers in my industry for real advice.

So if OP is saying “stop using WSO as your main source of info for career guidance”. I’d say he’s right. But most people aren’t using it that way.

WSO is a starting point for learning about new topics, and also a good place to discuss finance related topics. I think if you treat it that way you’re fine

Well, mate, you used biased sentences, and I will try to give my comment as a person who uses WSO already for several months.

  1. You said there is no one path. That sentence is correct but WSO community also supports that. It is a finance forum, so naturally people here are interested in finance. It is as simple as that. Additionally, finance itself is huge industry starting from PE ending with Corp development etc. By saying one path I assume you meant "IB>PE>MBA>PE" route. Again, not everyone in WSO followed or follows that path. Also, there are different banks with different groups in it, different PE shops, different bschools. Additionally, no one here orders you to follow that path, it is totally up to you in which direction you want to go.
  1. You mentioned "not listen to strangers". Every reasonable person knows that. However, consider the fact that not everyone was at first familiar with the finance industry. In WSO you get the taste of what the finance career options look like. In this forum there are many people who knows and achieved more than me and you, and listening to their advice or at least paying attention to the advice can be helpful. Here, no one tells you do this and dont do that, people just give their own insights, listening to them is up to you.
  1. You said toxic forum. I dont know what you meant by saying that but I find people here very interesting. This forum has probably the biggest online density regarding the number of really hard-working and ambitious people who instead of hiding everything to not "advantage to competitors", help each-other. People here talk about real stuff without sugar adding and cliche sentences.

I actually agree with the sentiment but I learned a lot of stuff on this forum like networking, comp expectations, selling myself and how to use big words like sentiment.

The problem with relativism is that most fail to grasp the nuances of it

Never discuss with idiots, first they drag you at their level, then they beat you with experience.

If I stopped listening to strangers on the internet because you (a stranger on the internet) told me to, I would still be listening to strangers on the internet.
