Stuck Paying for Summer Housing?

Basically, my apartment complex for the summer is saying that I still have to pay the full amount if my internship is canceled and I don't even move in? Anyone else having problems with this? It was a lot of money already since it's downtown housing but now I might be just throwing away thousands if I don't even move in.

Was this through a sublease/airbnb or through an actual college summer housing program?

Apartment that does summer intern housing, official lease signed

Don't pay it lol. Tell them good luck collecting. Very unlikely they could be successful forcing you to pay it through court, esp. given current situation. They are banking on the fact that people will still pay if they tell them they have to pay.

Please tell me you didn't pay for your summer housing up front and in advance...

i would also suggest you verbally tell the landlord (not in text/ writing, but with a phone call) that you will not be using their housing, and suggest they find another tenant, and just ignore them if they try to pressure you...don't fight...just say sorry and hang up. doubtful they will send this to a collection company or be able to collect if eviction ban is still in effect (currently is for NY state).

worst case, if they do sell the debt to a collection company and it goes onto your credit report, you can get it taken off your credit report by send a letter to the collection company. There is a specific format of letter required...but basically because of the consumer protection laws, if you request the collection company to provide you written proof of the debt within 30 days of you asking, they most often don't have it, and then the credit reporting agencies will remove the debt collection from your credit report, and it can't be re-added (the laws are very consumer friendly, but you have to do a little research on how to do it...there are credit repair books that teach this stuff for like $10)

Those so called companies are absolute dxck. I had mine through airbnb and the landlord was kind enough to understand the situation. Sorry to hear what happened

Which state is this for and when did you sign the lease? I think you will be able to avoid having to pay them anything, especially if you signed the lease papers before the quarantine occurred. There's a clause known as force majure, which is a clause that frees you from being able to fulfill a contract due to unforeseeable circumstances. If you signed the lease papers before the quarantine, I am confident you will be able to fight this off using that clause.

If you signed it after the quarantine, it might be harder but still doable and contingent on the laws governing the city you're moving to. You should definitely fight the landlords on this and not give them a penny. If you lose the fight with the landlords, I would go after the company that cancelled the internship, especially if they were promising you that the internship wouldn't be cancelled. Hopefully you have some sort of email correspondence of the company confirming that the internship wouldn't be cancelled.

Do not pay a penny.
