The Dark Knight – Will It Rise or Fall?

'The Dark Knight Rises' is one of the most anticipated films of 2012 and I must say I am very excited to see it and have already booked tickets! Who else is looking forward to this epic conclusion? I personally wasn’t too ‘amazed’ by ‘the amazing Spiderman’ so I have high expectations for this movie.

Do you think it will make more money then the Dark Knight and the Avengers? Will it live up to the hype?

"Tracking" figures for the new film – estimates based on research by studios into the viewing plans of cinemagoers – suggest it will eclipse the record-breaking $158.4m (£102m) opening of the 2008 movie.

I noticed a lot of recent films are becoming the most grossing films of all time. Do you think this is because cinema ticket prices have risen or because more people are watching movies?

I think it has to do with the fact that yes, ticket prices have risen but moreover more and more movies just suck. There are so few nowadays that are really worth seeing so I think yours seeing people simply pick and choose a few movies a year which are the 'best' ones.

I am excited to see this movie as well and I think that unlike most movies that are this hyped it will live up to expectations. If anyone can pull it off Christopher Nolan can.

Is it trending on twitter? If it is, expect big numbers. HP Labs predicts movie revenues with Twitter

I think its going to go big. Avatar big? Maybe. This might be one of the most successful movie trilogies of all time. Batman Begins was great. The Dark Knight built on its success and brought an even broader audience to theaters. I can't think of a reason why Dark Knight Rises won't go bigger than the Dark Knight. It is a great Crescendo trilogy, capturing larger and larger audiences with each new movie.

I suspect this movie is going to do well even though ticket prices are getting absurd.

Disclaimer: I know nothing of how theaters decide on what to show, but this is what I would do:

Theaters need to cash in on the shorter periods a movie is up as they struggle to figure out what will be a hit and what won't be for the volume of films made. Most probably say "fuckit" and play whatever with a loose correlation to expected attendance. I can't say I think it's easy, but making money usually isn't.

Theater owners should demand prescreenings for each location's manager and an expected rating. Force them to watch the stuff they are playing and then make them responsible for their expected turnout/initial rating. The managers who can rate movies closest to their theater's turnout should be rewarded appropriately. Those who can't predict as well get nothing or suffer penalties. Theaters should be able to estimate demographic information - if they aren't, they are missing a huge opportunity.

E.g., certain kids films will do better in an area with younger married couples, even if the movies flop nationally. This would allow the theater to cash in on the concept of localization.

Movie Theaters make something like 7 cents on each ticket sold....

The answer to your question is 1) network 2) get involved 3) beef up your resume 4) repeat -happypantsmcgee WSO is not your personal search function.

Movie theatres make an increasing percentage of ticket sales each week a movie is out ie. week 1 of batman they make 0% of ticket sales, week 2 they make 10% and so on.

My film study teacher told me otherwise. Look how useless school is.

They will make another one if the $$$ is there. They won't announce it for a few years or so. Really depends on the storyline.

What sucks is....Probably won't be able to see it until the Tuesday or wednesday after it opens. I dont like sitting first row.

Eventus stultorum magister.

IMAX and 3D are helping today's movies gross more. Beyond that, general admission ticket prices are also up.

Will this movie crush it? I'd put money on it. Can't fucking wait to see it. How big can it get? Not sure. Think it'll beat Avengers, and maybe even Titanic, but think Avatar keeps its record.

Hell... the 3rd Transformers movie is #5 on the all-time list.

As far as another one goes, I don't think it will happen. Nolan has been pretty adamant about this being the final piece of the story (as referenced in the video in the link above).

Given the success of The Avengers, I do think someone will develop and try to make a Justice League film, but I'm not too sure Nolan or Bale would sign up for that. I like the idea of a JL assuming they build some movies around the individual characters, similar to what Marvel did. These are money making machines for the movie studios and fun to watch, so I'm on board.

I'm also excited to see how Man of Steel will turn out. Nolan did such a great job with Batman, I have high hopes for Superman as well.
