The Not So Beautiful Game

FIFA has made dominated the headlines this week after top officials were arrested in Switzerland. The un-surprising charges of fraud just offered a reminder of how despicable FIFA really is. But just in case you need to be reminded once again, here are three reasons why FIFA is so incredibly financially corrupt and unethical.

1.Qatar Bought the 2022 World Cup

Summers in Qatar can reach the nice temperature 130 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to this the 2022 World Cup will be held in the winter instead of the summer. Millions of dollars will be lost across Europe due to the interference with the seasons of top tier league. Also, imagine how the World Cup will fare against the NFL playoffs in the U.S. So why Qatar? Bribery and corruption. Mohammad Bin Hamman, the leader in obtaining the bid for Qatar, was given a five million dollars to spread over ten slush funds. These slush funds help buy votes for Qatar from African soccer executives.

2.FIFA Supports Slave Labor

It is estimated 4,000 people will die to build the stadiums for the 2022 world cup. Not a single person who will actually be from Qatar. Thousands of immigrants from poverty stricken countries in South East Asia sign indentured servant contracts. Stuck within these contracts and their passports taken, these workers are trapped. They live in animal like accommodations and go to work in the intense heat every day. All to fuel to FIFA machine. Why the immigrants? Qatar has the highest per capita income in the world. Rich in oil reserves accompanied with a population of only 200,000 makes this an extremely wealthy country. The imported labor makes building the massive stadiums and facilities cheap, ample, and disposable in the eyes of Qatar.

3. FIFA wins and the host country loses

FIFA prides itself on improving the economies of the host countries. The World Cup is the most profitable sporting event in the world. The 2014 World Cup in Brazil brought in a cool 2 billion dollars for FIFA. However, Brazil’s economy took a massive hit.

While the month-long tournament drew a million foreign tourists to Brazil–far exceeding official expectations–economists say its impact on other sectors of the economy was decidedly negative. Some World Cup host cities declared municipal holidays on days when matches were played in local stadiums, while untold legions of workers played hooky to watch the Brazilian national team’s seven games.

You also forgot to mention how the slimy bastard Sepp Blatter bought his presidency for life by giving significant amounts of money to many small nations' soccer organizations, as each country gets one vote in the elections and those small nations' soccer organizations almost all support him.

This is a great article: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/01/world/americas/ex-fifa-official-jack-…

Also, Qatar has 2 million people, not 200,000.

well they wouldve played hooky no matter where the games would have been played, though the stadium in Manaus sounds like it was a huge waste, there isn't even a local team in that city as far as i know.

Im from one of those countries where football is a religion but the truth is, i never ever liked it i don't get why the fuck i should sit my ass watching non-educated overpaid guys running around with a ball like mad dogs and that for 1h45 hour, wow 1h45 is my time that worthless? cheering for them when they win a cup? wtf they get dream bonuses and i'm here sitting and working my ass off everyday....well fuck you FIFA, and fuck you football.

Runs for election, takes the majority of votes, forces Prince Ali to withdraw from the election, therein, his candidacy becomes void.

Resigns 3 days later

Wow did not see this coming at all . Good news for the sport although he is staying until his successor is found .

The DoJ must have something big on him. I figured that they indicted a bunch of his lieutenants with the aim of getting them to turn on him. Kinda like drug dealers. I just didn't think it would be this quick.

FIFA is so incredibly corrupt it's amazing. NCAA doesn't come anywhere close. Goodell may be an ass, and MLB turned a blind eye to steroids, but FIFA is just pure bribery and corruption at a massive scale. When the DoJ first announced their case last week I saw a few quotes from Premier League, UEFA folks (I don't think official press releases) and others around the world saying that while the US oversteps its bounds in many things, they looked forward to this because the US is the only country with the financial/banking and extraditing reach to be able to clean up FIFA. Unless they all run to North Korea or Iran they're pretty screwed.
