Tiger Woods, the world’s no. 1 player, will not be playing in the Masters next weekend. The news came as a shock to the golf world earlier today as Tiger tweeted from his personal twitter account. His statement read, "sad to say I’m missing the Masters. Thanks to the fans for so many kind wishes”.
Woods underwent back surgery on Monday for a pinched nerve that had allegedly been bothering him since the start of the year. He hopes for a speedy recovery, but many are concerned that he will not be healthy in time for the second major of the year, the U.S. Open which will take place in mid June.
With Tigers track record both on and off the course the last several years, many are skeptical that he will ever win another major, yet alone beat Jack Nicklaus’ record 18 major championships. Woods currently holds 14, with his last major title being the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines.
Most likely, golf’s number one player will step down in the rankings come Masters weekend as Adam Scott, the currently ranked no. 2 player, is coming off a top 3 finish last weekend at Bay Hill and is playing some of the best golf of his career.
So what does this mean for his career? In the end, it is up for discussion whether or not Tiger will ever win another major title and if he has lost his “mojo” or not. I’d love to hear what people think about his move to withdraw and where they think his career is going.

It's gotta be hard as hell to play golf at that level with a bad back. Really hope he can bounce back and be ready for the other majors.

Not sure what it means for his career. If he can come back from back surgery pretty quickly I think he can be a decent golfer. I think his mental game got crushed when Elin figured out he was running around. Almost like all of his power came from keeping this huge secret from the world.

I listen to a little bit of sports radio and a few of the radio hosts had a doctor in to talk about the surgery. The back doctor that they were speaking to basically said that this type of surgery is the "tonsilectomy" in the back surgery arena. Very routine with very predictable recovery time. His one thought about how long it will take Tiger to return was a pretty good point. He said that with Tiger's age, and the difference between someone young (early 20's) and somebody 38 would be how cautious he is in recovering. He thinks that Tiger will use as much recovery as necessary to get as close to 100% as possible. Gone are the days where he might try TPC or the US Open with a partial recovery.
@wareagle4230 totally agree, from my understanding this surgery is pretty minor and he is expected to make a full recovery. But with all of his injuries (knee, back, etc.) stacking up over the past few years, I think that he is having trouble being consistent on the golf course and I think that has caused his mental game to give way in recent majors.
Tiger will be back and he will be fine, I'm betting he runs a little stack with some GH to help recover from this surgery. If you actually get pharm grade FDA approved GH, your body will turn bullet proof. He will be fine.
Yeah, that's the other side of this. Their care and pharma situation (as long as it is moderately aligned with PGA rules) is way better than anything you or I could have.

Yeah I don't get that either... anyways, did any of you guys hear a story about the PGA's disability program? I was listening to the radio a while back and they were alluding to the idea that if a golfer doesn't play well in a tournament, it's highly likely that they will pull out and apply for disability status because of their back or some other random injury. Basically they file what amounts to a "short-term disability" claim and the PGA pays them a sweet little amount for the month ($10k) or so that they are out, then they get back on the tour and try to win again. It's amazing how drastically the game has changed over the past few years. Tiger used to be dominant and was always in the chase on Sundays, and now just about anyone on tour is capable of winning. The young guns (Keegan Bradley, Bubba Watson, etc) are truly incredible and there are so many of them who can compete every week!
