Tonsillectomy at 23 yrs old
After getting strep throat for seemingly the 100th time this year, I am increasingly interested in getting my tonsils removed. I get tonsilitis and throat infections very often and have since I was in high school. I know my insurance will fully cover it, but since I have quite a lot of scar tissue on my tonsils, I'm not sure if having the surgery would be worth the recovery time or if I'm better off just getting through being sick and sucking it up. I know most people get their tonsils out when they're kids, but if anyone has gone through this as an adult I would be interested to hear if it improved your quality of life having them removed.

I clicked on this link and the first post was “Getting My Tonsils Removed is Paradise.” What is this a parallel world?

I got mine removed at 19. Stopped getting sick nearly as often no regrets and it's not that painful. Veg out on some videogames and get ready to eat jello.
Get good blender and use it as an excuse to test every food as a smoothie. It's something I regret not doing when I had it at age 22.
Try icecream and french fry shake from McDonalds
I never got them out but got strep a ton in college and my doctor was thinking about it. I will say I believe I was getting sick so often because I lived in my fraternity house throughout school because the second I moved out I stopped getting sick lol.
Maybe ask your doctor?
I got them out when I was like 4. Still got strep a lot growing up and maybe once every 2 or 3 years now as an adult
I got it done at 22. It was actually very difficult for a week. I basically couldn’t eat and it hurt to drink. Couldn’t talk for a few days at least. Both because it hurt so badly, and also there was just a ton of blood that pooled in my throat and uvula. It was touching my tongue so I couldn’t talk anyway, even if it didn’t hurt.
Was it worth it? Probably. Pain is pretty temporary. I was also home and not working during this time so it was doable. Although I will note, I only took the painkillers for 1 day (was prescribed many more). Not worth risking addiction imo.
Before getting them out my body was constantly fighting viruses. Literally, that’s what my doctor said. I’d wake up every morning and spit out a bunch of green/brown phlegm. My tonsils were almost touching. Actually, the reason I finally did get them out was I thought they were blocking my throat. Turns out it was probably just Covid making it hard for me to breathe but this was before we could test for it.
Anyway that’s tmi but happy to answer any questions about the recovery or anything.
I did the same thing last time I was prescribed painkillers. Had never taken any before (fortunately have never had to have any painful procedures done) and honestly I didn't need them this time, but the doctor prescribed them anyway. Took one, got scared by how good it felt, and got rid of them the next day and just switched back to NSAIDs.
I got them out quite a while ago but I went from getting sick with strep 4-5 times a year to never getting it again. Plus, I think it helped me breathe better in sports.
Although I was 12-13 when I got them out, I don’t think recovery would be worse as an adult. Check to see what an ENT or whatever thinks and if they say it would be beneficial you should probably do it (in my opinion).
