Trouble with college decision
UT Austin Mccombs vs Carnegie Mellon Tepper (both for finance undergrad)
Hello, I am currently struggling to decide between these two business schools. A dream of mine has been to work in banking whether that be in a BB or EB, but I am not 100% set on anything as of now. I know that neither of these schools are "targets" but they are also the only options I have. I am out of state for UT, so money is not a huge differentiator. Any advice would help me a ton!
*I did not get into the business honors program but if I go to UT I will apply for sophomore admissionI want to emphasize that the main thing I am having trouble finding would be which school it is more possible in to work in a NY BB or EB, even if it is difficult in non targets/semis. Which is it more possible in?
Awesome school's solid semi-targets in various areas (such as CMU for Tech as a target), UT is a T for energy banking.
If you are more interested in tech go CMU.
If you want to have alot of fun & wouldn't mind going into O&G --> UT.

Isn't Carnegie Mellon a much more selective school? Someone I know who had high SATs and grades was rejected by Carnegie Mellon
I've heard UT Austin is a blast. You could have fun there and get good grades for a couple years and try for a transfer.
i'd say carnegie but probably more fun at ut. dunno what you prioritize.
CMU is a strong target for tech and quant roles. CMU has decent placement in banking and the location makes it easy to take a New York networking trip. Imo CMU is just a better option if you're not focused on living in Texas or O&G banking
I'd argue for CMU, strictly on the basis of greater optionality. While now you may thing you want to go into banking, many plans don't survive first contact. Go to the school that is the best at the most things - this seems like CMU in this case. Also the pitt is a pretty cool place.
People have touched well on the academic front, but I would recommend that you consider fit and the campus environment you want. CMU is a smaller school with D3 sports, whereas UT is one of the largest state schools in the country. I would have to imagine the women at UT would be better looking and more fun, and women comprise a slightly greater percentage of the student body there as well. Both UT and CMU will give you very different experiences independent of academics so consider your happiness at school as another factor in your decision.
This 100%. I go to a target, and when I was applying to colleges, it was all about getting into "the best ranked school possible." I have no serious regrets because I've had a lot of fun and got a great job that I wouldn't have gotten at a non target, but sometimes I wish I focused more on fun and social life when I applied to college.
I sigh a little Every time I see my brother at a packed D1 basketball game pulling smoking hot chicks at his state school (Not a target, but solid- Think UMD, Penn State, etc), knowing that I've spent much of my college years listening to rich angry SJW feminist brats bitching about their oppression and scrawny dudes nutting over their wealthy parents and 'prestigious' school name/internships while spending all night in the library trying to pull their econometrics grade up from an A- to an A.
