Read the methodology of the ranking. It’s not just based on housing prices and rent. It takes into account the median income of people in the city too. So NYC is expensive but a lot of the people living there are getting paid. San Diego may be a bit cheaper, but the average person there isn’t earning as much. Not a ton of “go-getters” there

Oh ok makes sense. Yeah I have lived in SD and NYC and SD seems so much cheaper.

I recently learned that NYC is very large and has other cities around Manhattan that are considered part of it. It seems like only Manhattan + a few neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens are expensive but the majority of the borough cities around it are less overpriced. Perhaps when including all of NYC, it doesn't seem to be as expensive relative to the population compared to some smaller but more pricey areas in CA

Isn't it Canada above 14th st ?

Wow, it turns out Manhattan is only ~20% of the NYC population size, and the other boroughs are much cheaper in nearly every aspect. Ex: Manhattan median price/sq ft for housing is ~1500, while Bronx is ~325

Shhh, people don't like to be reminded that NYC doesn't solely include Manhattan and Brooklyn west of the BQE.

I currently live in San Diego, California.  Rent prices have increased dramatically, along with housing prices.  You don't want to pay $700-900k for a shack in the ghetto where stabbings and shootings happen on a daily basis.  The nice safer neighborhoods will run 1.5-2m+ easily.  Apartments for a studio have increased as well, makes it difficult to move out to live on your own without some form of support.

I am from NY, but grew up in SD.  It is a beautiful city with a lot to offer.  Homeless are an issue, but the city is doing its best to address it.  Friends who had left SD for work/education eventually made their way back here.  Friends that left, left because cost of living was out of control for what they were budgeting for.

Lastly, it doesn't matter where you are.  There's always a way to make a buck.  Gotta hustle for it, right?
