Wallstreetoasis.com is blocked in Russia
So, last couple days trying to access WSO, I got the message from my ISP (short translation):
Dear users!
We apologize, but access to this website is forbidden. Possible reasons for this might be:
1. Address of the website is included in the List of Forbidden Websites.
2. Access to the website is forbidden upon the decision of the Russian court or other reasons prescribed by the Russian legislation.
Yes, there is List of Forbidden Sites in Russia, maintained by governmental bodies. It was introduced last year and official reason for it was "limiting the access to propaganda of suicide, drug taking and extremism".
Since the introduction there were a lot of websites / webpages added to the List, among which these:
- Page with strip comics making fun the List
- Video from Australian metro authorities "Dumb Ways To Die"
- Page with description of virtual drugs in some online game.
And many more. And this (wrongly picked content to ban) is only first problem with the List. Another one is the way how the ban works. In short (at least as I have learnt): bodies maintaining the List send to all major ISPs the notification that the following site should be banned for all the users. I am not sure how ISPs do this, because in last months I have seen various situations. Quite often ISP bans just IP address or even range of IP addresses associated with the bad (let's assume it's fairly bad, not like examples above) website, and all other sites that are hosted in the same range become unavailable. I guess this is what happened to WSO, too. It just shares IP range with some site that was added to the List recently. Not all ISPs block WSO (e.g. I am able to access the site from the office), but at least major Russian ISP "Rostelecom" (and its subsidiaries) ban it for sure.
Of course, experienced PC users easily find workarounds (the easiest is to use Opera browser with "Opera Turbo" mode on - it just streams traffic through their server, works kinda like proxy but without much effort from the user). But this is just sad how it works. Wanted to share. Peace!
"Modern Russia" is nothing more but the same crap it's always been, just veiled in the show game of elections controlled by Putin and his kleptocratic group of former KGB criminals. RUSSIANS: put down the vodka and start thinking for yourselves. You should be one of the richest peoples on earth but your corrupt leaders keep you ignorant so they can keep all the wealth for themselves, all the while blaming everyone else for the problems.
WAKE UP!!!
Signed, -Actual Russian.
There. Now this site is officially banned. Feel better?
Wow, that sucks...think we had a happy hour in Moscow too...guess nothing we can really do except maybe ask our Russian monkeys to petition the government to lift the ban?
They're still mad because Pat was a major financial contributor to the production of the FX series "The Americans"
Use a VPN? That's what my friend did when he was visiting China.
This guy is lying; I could access WSO using a Russian proxy http://www.wallstreetoasis.com.ext.1.gsr.saariselka.ru/welcome

Confirmed.

I was actually going to suggest use a proxy to access it. I've heard of people in China (have lots of international Chinese friends) using web based proxies not even the VPN to access certain websites that are otherwise blocked. It may be the same for WSO. It may not be one of those "super blocked" sites.
We should have a WSO meetup in Russia
In the 70's Putin was in was in the K Bee Gees
yeah, just checked analytics...Russia traffic as high as ever...still a small % overall though
What's more, people, tonight all sites at *.wordpress.com domain were blocked. The same reason - added to the List of Forbidden Sites. Obviously, the situation is familiar, one site on wordpress.com domain is banned, and ISPs blindly ban the whole domain with all subdomains.
The problem is confirmed by all users of major Russian ISPs - Rostelecom and Beeline. I guess at certain point they will understand their mistake but at the moment, however, it is a fact - all .wordpress.com sites are blocked.
bonerjams2009.com is blocked here in Islamabad
It seems that wso was removed from the ban list. Lat week when I saw that "ban warning" I finally realized it's time to move from here...
It's weird but I live in Russia and was able to access WSO all that time (did it just a few times last month though).
Are you sure it was banned? It would be extremely stupid thing to do...
I thought all the people in Russia were just bears on unicycles. ;)
