We all know how hard this is and the health risks...
All - my doctor just informed me that I likely have an "intracardiac shunt". Effectively some amount of blood pumping left to right due to a "hole" in the heart.
Have been a super healthy athlete all my life and I'm terrified to come to realization that all this stress has come at too great a cost.
I've never had this issue until last year. Been in IB ~5 years. Had the worst year last year stress wise (workload, brutal office politics et al). Eventually started feeling strange sensations in the heart which led me to get checked out via a regular echo and then a "bubble" test. Otherwise have been ultra-healthy. I'm shocked.
Has anyone ever dealt this with? Would mean the world to have some relatability on this. Praying to God.

Hang in there man, I'm a college student and haven't started yet, but I saw my dad put 80-100 hours into work, and it wasn't a pleasant sight. Please, please try to quit or find something in an adjacent role, investing/corp dev/business school. There is nothing more important than your health. I know it might be hard and everyone's situation is different, but please prioritize your wellbeing.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, your situation resonates with many in the high-stress world of investment banking. The intense workload, long hours, and constant pressure can take a significant toll on physical and mental health, even for those who have been healthy athletes their entire lives.
Several threads on WSO discuss similar health challenges faced by professionals in IB, including heart-related issues like angina and other stress-induced conditions. For example, one user shared their experience with angina caused by the relentless demands of IB, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing sleep, maintaining a healthy diet, and avoiding alcohol and smoking during these high-stress years. Light exercise, rather than intense workouts, was also recommended to avoid overburdening the body.
While your specific condition, an intracardiac shunt, may not have been directly mentioned in the threads, the underlying theme is clear: stress and overwork can exacerbate or even trigger serious health issues. It's crucial to take this diagnosis seriously and work closely with your doctor to manage your condition. Additionally, consider reevaluating your work-life balance and exploring ways to reduce stress, whether through therapy, mindfulness practices, or even a career shift if necessary.
You're not alone in this, and many in the community have faced similar wake-up calls. Sharing your story and seeking support from others who understand the pressures of IB can be incredibly helpful. Stay strong, and prioritize your health above all else.
